I suspect that paper did not guarantee it met the same specification as a more expensive paper, whereas I understand the oil does say it meets the relevant spec, so hardly an equivalent situation.

A fair point, however although photo paper does not have spec oversight as such the description and intent seemed clear and unambiguous enough so ultimately it all comes down to specs (neither wholly foolproof nor the complete story) and intent. For those who wish to take the risk and save a small amount of cash (relatively) good luck, I would not take such a risk with Sparky especially as there are no more made nor a real equivalent from Jaguar.

By the way, who knows, for an old engine should I change the oil to a gentler one?

If anything, and older engine needs heavier weight. Gotta keep oil from running out of those huge bearing clearances.

I buy whatever oil the dealership uses. It's never a king's ransom either way.

Not that I am an expert, but if their store brand oil is of same quality as their store brand wine; its OK. Kirkland Brand wines have not disappointed me to date. I do not rev. up like I used to, but high mileage is no reason not to travel.

James it may help if you added your cars deets to your signature strip along with your country/state*, as your first post we'll let you off and say welcome

It's just to ensure you're posting in the correct forum really (a few newbies don't)

I pay a mere £10/$12.50+tax per liter for the correct 0w20 oil for my 2014 5.0l, so there's no way am gonna jeopardise things for the sake of a few ££'s

Note that in some hot/harsh environments with regular temps over 100f some stick to the older spec oil.

Are we honestly expected to look at peeps profiles to deduce stuff like that?

Agreed, I should be more tolerant as James may be new to car forums or else has just passed his driving test

Agreed on their wines. All quite great values and good representations for the money.

I was looking at the Amazon Basics 5w30 high mileage formula for my 125k mile 4.2 SC a few minutes ago and ended up here, who knew I was going to get all of that other good stuff? It's the same as those others, it meets the requirements and all of that but I'm still skeptical. I'm really between Castrol Edge 5w30 high mileage and Edge 5w30 extended service formulas, I can't decide if the extended service formula is too thin for an old motor and might open it up to problems.
