Hi Danny,
Congrratulations, again. When I bought mine a couple of years ago, it also only had one key fob and no owner's manual. I ordered both on ebay, I think the manual with all of the books and the leather case was about a $100, and a used key fob in perfect condition was maybe $25-30. I had the key de-programmed and then re-programmed at a locksmith who has the capability, and I want to say it was around a $100 as well. The local Jaguar dealer wanted more than 3 times as much.

Enjoy!!

Thanks again!

What's up with these former owners who done give back both sets of keys and the owner's manual??

I looked on eBay for a key and they seem to run about $125-$150. I found key fob shells without the internal electronics for $25ish. I found an owner's manual for $200 but that seems too pricey. I'll continue looking...

Hey Danny,
Wow have prices gone up in the last two years, more than double what I paid for both pieces less than 2 years ago. Here are a couple that were at least less than what you were looking at. Good luck.

Tberg,
Thanks for the links. I actually broke down and bought the key from the dealer. With programming, it'll cost more than $800. Oh well, I got such a screaming deal on the car and they reduced the price by $300 more because of the missing key, I figured I could take the easy route and not worry about it and just get it from the dealer. Mixed feelings about it but it's behind me now...

XJDanny - welcome aboard. Congratulations. Enjoy your ride. Now that you have driven it home, you know what a superb GT it is. Hope you got to take it through some real twisties en route because that is a real treat too. Enjoy the ride.

Well, I bought the manual Tberg found on EBay yesterday morning. Thanks again, Tberg!

Then yesterday afternoon I was detailing the car and I realized I hadn't looked at the spare. I lifted up the cover in the trunk and there was the owner's manual next to the spare! Who keeps the owner's manual with the spare?? It never occurred to me to look there. So I went from having no owner's manual to having two. I'll just list the one I bought on eBay for sale again on eBay after it arrives.

Then I noticed the front plate was next to the spare as well. It still was in the envelope from the department of motor vehicles and had the previous owner's name and address on the envelope. So I Googled his name and address and got his phone number. I then called him and explained I was sorry to bother him but I was the new owner of his car and I only had one key remote and a replacement was more than $800. I asked if he still by chance happened to have the second remote. He seemed put off that I called him but still told me which dealership he traded the car into and that he had fedex'd the second remote to them. I then called the dealer and asked if they still had the remote. The helpful salesman I spoke to remembered the car and he checked for me. They still had the remote and he's mailing it to me on Monday! Yay!! So now I can return the super expensive remote I bought at the Jaguar dealer.

VERY happy I looked at the spare tire! :-)

The moral of this story is always check to make sure you have a spare tire and wheel and you may find some other goodies hidden there. Nice ending to an interesting story.

Will the dealer take the key fob back? Or did you not have it programmed or cut yet? Seems like you might have just gotten the better part of a $1000 off the price of your car!

I bought the key fob and it was like $350. It would have been an hour labor to program it, which I hadn't done yet. That would have been over $100. I'm sure I can return the key fob. I also ordered the key, which needed to be cut. That was about $250. When I was at the dealer buying the key, I calculated it all would cost more than $800. The key was missing from the key fob I did get from the Lexus dealer so I still need that. So by returning the key fob and not having to have it programmed, I'm probably saving around $500. VERY happy about that!

I think I'll send the salesman who is mailing it to me a gift card to a restaurant near his dealership with a thank you card.

Cutting one costs about $20 at a decent shop.

As a suggestion, get a clear bra (at least for the front bumper) to avoid the nasty road chips while keeping your car pristine. Enjoy.
