Firstly, are you running your cooling system on pure water? When that hose splits the valley is coated in coolant, especially when you lose it all as you did, and it would be impossible to remove the inlet manifold and not see the pink, green or blue coolant residue everywhere. Years ago I used to buy colourless coolant but I've not seen it for years and am not sure that it is still available but even then there would be sticky clear residue inside the valley. If you are running the cooling system on pure water without any anti-corrosion additive, your cooling components will be corroding internally.
I was hoping that, having benefitted from a correct diagnosis of the issue, the OP would return and fill in some of the missing information as that might help others who find this thread in the future.

Instead of hoping that the OP (DugLA) will see your post, you can make sure that he does by tagging him , like this: @DugLA Simply start by typing the ampersand key @ followed by the User Name DugLA and a dialogue box will pop up for you to select that name. Then write a note and send it. DugLA will receive an email that he's been tagged with a link in his Private Messages.

Since I just tagged him, he will receive an email that he's been tagged, as I explained above. He'll probably read this, but that's no guarantee that he will reply.

Whoopsies.... not an Ampersand, those are the "&" symbol. You meant the "at" symbol. I'm sure just a brain fart on your part.

@, "at", a logogram technically known as an asperand or occasionally as an ampersat. Just another of my pointless dadfacts.

Okay, but you originally wrote "ampersand", which is the "&" sign. Totally agree 'asperand' is the "at" @.

Default Been gone.

Sorry, people, that I haven't updated my situation, but I've been out of town for a week and unable to do anything further. I have ordered the hose and should be here in a few days. And, to Richard S., I had the correct pink/reddish coolant in the engine so don't have an answer for why it isn't any trace showing in the valley, itself. i definitely will update when I go further. It's the least I can do considering the kind responses I have received. Thank all, again.

Thank you for updating is. That is very odd. In every case I have read about, the pink coolant runs out of the back of the valley and down over the bellhousing and is very obvious when you look at the back of the engine and so gives an early warning that the hose is failing.

In my case, documented in another thread, no coolant at all ran down over the bellhousing so I had no early warning. All my coolant was running out of the cracked valley hose and down under the large black rubber bung/plate which is adjacent to the hose. From there it inevitably makes its way, unseen, into the torque converter bellhousing itself. I was not aware of this until I removed the rubber bung in the bottom of the bellhousing and coolant poured out. If left unchecked, there is the possibility the coolant might find its way past the oil seals and either into the gearbox or the crankcase which could proved terminal for either of these.

You might wish to do what I have done and remove and replace the valley rubber bung after sealing it with silicon RTV. In future, I will see any leaking coolant on top of the bellhousing where it cannot do any damage.

The valley flooded on my 4.2 X350. It was was a relatively slow leak and I was too busy/lazy to deal with it promptly - just kept topping up. In the end, I was forced to sort it out because the "pond" in the valley killed the knock sensors - so I had to replace them as well as the hose and the thermostat tower.

The knock sensors on the X100 4.2 are mounted into bosses which are much higher than the low lip which stops coolant draining out of the back of the valley and over the top of the bellhousing. It sounds as if sealing the large rubber plate, assuming there is one on the X350, might not be such a good idea as at least the coolant can drain into it and away from the sensors. Drilling a small hole in the bottom of the lower bellhousing bung might be worth considering if those bungs are well sealed.
