Default Loud hissing noise

Driving back home today, put my foot down a few times as you do!.

Was driving through some hedged lanes and heard a hissing noise( had the windows down ) thought it was someone strimming behind the hedge at first, was stopped at a junction with other vehicles around me so thought nothing of it.
Carried on driving and heard it again, urther on and again, several times lasting around 10-15 seconds a time.

This was loud, it sounded like a blast from an air compressor a loud pshhhhhhh!!

A few miles on it stopeed completely, doing no more than say 40mph and thats it, no error codes, nothing leaking anywhere fluid wise.

Vacuum pipes?
Pipe from egr?
is there some sort of pressure one way valvethats leaking ?

Anyone with any suggestions what to look at.

I am calling into the local jag specialists tomorrow and checking if they can do the smoke test for me, also make sure that there are no fuses missing anywhere thats preventing any warning codes from coming up.
Going to check the engine bay out shortly.

I have the EPC now so I am looking over that also, wont hurt to replace the vacuum pipes etc anyway.

thanks

U.B.

Exhaust leaks can sound like that and as you mentioned, possible vacuum issues will make some noise.

just went out to see if i can see anything, nope nothing is visable no leaks etc. I only got the car last thursday, trader said all fluids etc were done, noreason to disbeieve him.

coolant was basically non existant in the tank and the oil just covered the twist in the dipstick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know the car takes 5w-30 and i still had a load of mercedes sae 5w-30 here so i just filled it with that, I going to call the jag specialist tomorrow and see if i can get it in quick for a full fluid change and replace the thermostat etc.
Messaging trader waiting for reply, not a happy bunny!!.

I am using jpart now to look for parts etc, where in there do i find the details for the vacuum pipes? which section?

Thanks

Sorry to say, but I'd be more disappointed in the purchaser for not doing a cursory inspection.

I was assured by the trader prior to myself driving almost 250 miles in our discussions that all had been done.

I had asked about the most recent service and what it entailed, I did discuss, fluids, brakes, filters, thermostat etc etc as I had done my research before choosing said car.

I had the car checked using car vertical etc.

Due to time restrictions on my part it was arrive test drive and away to get back for my kids.

I had no reason not to trust the trader who has since apologised on their part for the issues and things have been resolved favourably.

I was made aware of the issues of a blown brake light and one faulty pedestrian sensor which I fixed the next day.

The jag specialist has said the hissing is probably a vacuum pipe that finally gave up but was not present at the time. The test drive was very spirited and it did not present itself there or in the long drive home.

I have never had to disbelieve a car trader in all the years I have bought from them. Not going to start now.

I'm good in my checks of the car and drive it every day to and from work with no issues.

if you could hear it clearly while stopped, and it never came back, and you have no intake-related codes in history, then i would figure it was probably debris making contact with a fan or belt. like a leaf, or a plastic bag.

It's possible, but I think having the smoke test done is a prudent thing to do. Also replacing the piping, fittings etc is preventative. Reading through the forum I will have the complete thermostat housing done in one go rather than just the thermostat as the last one was 2018. First things are coolant, thermostat housing, oil and filter, gearbox sump and filter and diff.

I have a list of all the arms etc for the front and back will be ordered for the end of the month, I will replace them.

It's a good car and gives me something else to work on after doing the same to my old merc.

Looking forward to working on it.

Thanks for all the advice and suggestions most appreciated.
