Default My quest for power has lead me to "The Matrix"

Hey guys
So after 2 years after getting this car I have been trying to squeeze any extra power I can. Got the pulley installed, reworked the airbox and intake tubes.
Went to get the car tuned by some reputable tuners on this forums, but the results were less than impressive. I got only +7hp with one tuner and - hp with another. Got most of the money refunded from one tuner and taking the second one to court since they refused to work me.
Anyways to make the long story short.
I was frustrated with the lack of a tuner who can actually provide proper results , so I took a dive into the unknown. I got the proper equipment to do everything myself, which took a while and wasn't easy to figure out. After that part, big part was learning how to get maps defined in my ECU as everything of course is encoded and there are thousands and thousand bits of information to work with. Fast forward 6 month or so
Here I am now in "The Matrix" : take me less than 10 min to load a new map into my car ,with some finger strokes on the keyboard I can modify to correct supercharger speed ratio for upgraded pulley, modify torque, load, throttle, timing, AFR, and much much more . The difference between my car with a pulley upgrade and a stock tune to modified tune is night and day. Torque that has been limited by factory in the lower to mid rpm spectrum on this car is a very substantial amount. Its like unlocking a new more powerful car.

Now its time to dial in the tune and hit the track to see what top hp gain is, although in the city driveability is already vastly improved and unmistakable..
To be continued.....

Besides WinOLS what else are you using? I attempted this some time ago but my lack of experience and training with writing tables kept from doing anything other than "playing around".

Very interested to see what you come up with!

Using mainly Alienttech equipment.
Finding maps on you own is really not easier than needle in a haystack. Trick is getting a hold of factory developer Damos packs which I now have. There is over 1200 maps to this ecu..

That’s essentially what VelocityAP uses and yielded me very little improvement over stock.

Can’t wait to hear what you see on the track!

EDIT: What sort of mods did you do to the intake? That’s what I am working on now.

Equipment makes no difference. The tuned file is what matters. Most tuners do have a minimum amount of maps if any and some only tweak one paremeter such as timing only which was my case from a tuner, got a minimal +7 hp and no improvement in drivability at all.

I was ready to purchase a tune and pulley for my 2012 XKR. Are you saying you only received 7rwhp from the tune vs stock tune?

I was assuming I’d get 50hp+ with tune and pulley. I’ve read all the pages in the F-Type/ XK forum and it seems everyone was happy with the different tunes. Dyno number are most important. Sorry to hear to you didn’t gain more HP. It sounds like you’ll enjoy working on a custom tune with that new equipment.

Thanks,
Joe

yes only 7hp gain with one tuner and actually lost hp with another. please check my threads from the past year or two.
Now Im not implying that you will get a minimal result from tuners as it all varies if tuners are competent, have the correct maps and how much time they are actually putting in to make proper tune

Joe,

Note that AlexJag has a 2008 XKR with the 4.2L engine. His experiences with tuners might not apply to your 2012 XKR with the newer 5.0L engine. They're like apples and oranges.

This would be the main reason I would want a before and after dyno run. If you negotiate price of the tune vs. HP gain that would be a reasonable approach. Buying a tune through the mail isn't the way to know what your results are going to be. Most of the tuners I've seen do their tune while the car is on the dyno. Just my 2 cents

Stuart,

Thanks for the clarification on the engines. I’m looking forward to seeing his results.

Interesting stuff, you no doubt know that when you go too far with modifying boost, mixture and timing then using all that extra power could become very expensive, like replacing your motor...torque converter or trans. This is way more likely to happen at a track when you will be at full throttle most of the time.
Just suggesting not to be too greedy..

That should be easily achievable. As you can see from my dyno results, just adding the XKR-S X-pipe and the XKR-S factory tune added 38 rwhp and 60 Nm of torque to my '10 XKR. It doesn't sound like a lot but the difference in power is incredible!

I am planning to add a pulley next once my mechanic has some spare time and will get it back on the dyno to see what difference that has made.

Looking forward to seeing your pulley results! I have a XKR-S xpipe installed and I’m ready to install a tune. Thanks for the input!
