Hi, just bought a 2008 XF 4.2. Beautiful car but there seems to be a problem with the OS headlight. The dip and main beam (HID) don't work and the rest of the bulbs light up dim (as if an earth fault). The os rear indicator and side repeater are lit up dim also. I've run a temporary earth from the headlight connector to the earth stud by the headlamp unit but its still the same. The adaptive self check also doesn't seem to work.
Any ideas please?

Welcome to Jaguar ownership. This is the XK forum; while many aspects of the cars are similar, you might get better answers on the XF (X250) forum.

CHARGE THE BATTERY!!! It seems basic, but these monsters are very finicky for voltage.

First, what do you mean by OS?
Which side fails, or is it both?
Have you done a code check with a JLR-compatible OBD reader?
Can you describe how the self-test fails?
Have you had any suspension work done?
How specifically do the low and high beam fail?

Hi, it's the drivers (right) side (rhd),
the drivers side headlight main/dip does not wiggle around when the ignition is switched on the passenger side does.
only fetched car yesterday so no codes read
No suspension work done that I am aware of
When running the right dip and main do not work but the other bulbs light up dim as if there is an earth fault

OS is Off-Side; NS is Near Side closest to the kerb (curb in the Colonies).

As has been suggested, use a smart phone with the Torque app to communicate with the vehicle by means of a Bluetooth interface through the OBD port to read any stored DTCs. For DTCs with the 'C' or 'U' prefix, you may need to have the vehicle inspected by a Jaguar specialist or main dealer.

Welcome to the forums Rjhoy02,

Less confusing to refer to Left (LH) or Right (RH) side as viewed from the rear of the vehicle looking forwards. This is the standard used in all Jaguar documentation.

I have to school my wife sometimes as she forgets, but EVERY 'vehicle' (jets, tanks, beds, bathtubs, chairs) has its positions set "As You Use It".

So I thought I'd update everyone on my findings. Doing a Web search I found an old thread on another forum where the owner had a similar problem. He managed to trace the fault to an earth point in the right front wheelarch.
I had a look last night and the stud broke off when I tried to loosen it. One of the ring terminals disintegrated in my hand.
Today I replaced the terminals and bolted them to the brake pipe support bracket as there is a spare hole there.
Tried the lights and all is working fine now. The stud is prone to salt corrosion in areas where rock salt is used on the roads.
Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.
