Noise when turning steering wheel
RHD 2009 XKR.
Noticed sound (like a spring compressing) when moving slowly, turning left beyond around 45 degree steering angle. Sound does not occur when moving slowly and turning right. It stops when car stops. No sound when car is stationary and steering wheel turned. Steering fluid level ok and looks clean. Noise is coming from under dash behind steering wheel.
Any thoughts? Thanks!

On some other cars I use, there is a kind of subtle grinding noise when the steering wheel is turned to the extreme, but it always happen immaterial of temperature. I've been told it's 'normal'. How 'cold' is your 'cold'? Over here anything below 15 degrees C is considered as 'cold'

So embarrasing this .
Turns out they're the brake pads which are nearly completely worn out! So much so there's a slight mark on the rotors (outer side, RHS) probably through metal to metal contact! When the wheels turn, the camber is such that the pads probably rest on the rotors making the metal to metal sound. This explains why it's only when I turn the steering left (RHD drive vehicle) will the sound occur. Luckily, I have a new set of front and rear OEM pads which looks like they'll be my next task on the XKR. Last time I checked them, I had some 3mm pad material left, so I must have eaten away a mm or so. Will report progress. Will need to hook up the SDD the release the park brake.
Anyone knows whether the rear pad cylinders need to be rotated and pushed in? I have the performance brakes but not the Alcon ones.

Ha! Same here though I found it more difficult to remove than to replace. To replace I found the best way was to centre the centre plate in its place, hook one end of the spring in place and pry the other end in with a screw driver. Then tap everything in place with a rubber mallet. Still not an easy task for me.
