Odd exhaust note question
(But then , those that know me are use to this kinda thing....)
OK, so I am in my happy place with my '07 XK, but now looking at newer (yet still used) next gen XKR as my next buy (less than a year away I hope). One of my dislikes of the 5.0 is the exhaust note, where i prefer the more cat like growl of the 4.2 motor.
My question is more theoretical in nature... Do you think a 4.2 XKR exhaust could be fitted t a 5.0 XKR to retain that refined growl? I doubt tubing diameter changed, and would think it possible.
Thoughts?
Vince
(Don't criticize please, I simply dislike the sound of the 5.0 over that of the 4.2, so I would consider finding ways to fix it if practical. It is just a personal preference.)
Thx

I don't think so, because I think that the characteristic of the 4.2 note came from the smaller bore. I had a Paramount exhaust put on my 4.2 XF and it sounded absolutely awesome, like an Aston. I then put that exhaust onto my 5.0NA XF (there was a bit of fiddling around to get it) and it didn't sound great - it kept the metallic howl.
Then when I got the XKR I pulled fuse 19 but that wasn't enough, so I had an X pipe put in. Everyone tells me how great it sounds, though I still preferred the 4.2 which had a throb as opposed to a howl (think 70's muscle car vs lambo). It does sound pretty intimidating when you give it the boot, though, and I do get people coming up to comment on the sound, so maybe I'm just fussy.
Sorry, I missed the real question - the tubing diameter did change, which was one of the things the exhaust guys had to work with when changing the paramount exhaust from the 4.2 to the 5.0. But that was an easy fix.

CleverName,
Last week when Ralph (2012 XK with Mina performance exhaust), Bob (2012 XKR with stock exhaust), and I (2010 XKR with Mina performance exhaust) got together, we each started our cars to compare. Ralph's XK was a deep, raspy great sounding growl, Bob's XKR was a nice sounding raspy exhaust, though not as deep as Ralphs. My car was quieter than both and more European sounding. I noticed that after I had the Mina exhaust installed, I felt it was "tighter" and quieter than my stock exhaust had been. This apparently was the experience from forum member Schwabe from whom I bought the Mina exhaust and he replaced with his stock one. I am considering doing the same thing.
Hope this helps.

I own a 2009 Jaguar XKR and can attest that the exhaust definately has the Jaguar "growl" to it. Just love the sound when accelerating.
Since so many like the sound of the exhaust and appears to be a big deal to most car owners, the exhaust was a major option that I added to my order for the 2015 Corvette C7.
Thanks to this forum and special attention to exhaust systems, you guys cost me an extra $1195.00 for the Multi-Note exhaust that GM offers on the Corvette C7.
I would have never thought that the exhaust system on these premium performance cars would so important to so many car owners.
But after owning the Jaguar XKR, I certainly agree.

I hope to someday put that to the test!
I'm just not into "Muscle Car" soundtrack....I don't want burbles...and barks and pops and farts. All that does nothing for me but sting my ears and remind me of a Ford Rustang.
I am bitten with the deep smooth and guttural growl they designed into the 4.2. No loud fanfare till you ask for it, and then the most pleasing clean (and unique) soundtrack I have ever experienced from a V8. I just love it and know I will miss it.
How differently did the exhaust system change for the 5.0? Still the single canister at the rear? Any difference in resonators forward?
What was the diameter shift from the 4.2 to the 5.0? 2.5 to 2.75?
When was the crossover introduced?
<sigh> I love my Jag.....

I believe the crossover first appeared on my car, the 75, in 2010. It then became an option (Performance Active Exhaust) on XKRs, and standard on the XKR-S. The crossover deletes the centre silencers, so when the active valves open & bypass the rear silencer, you have effectively straight pipes from the cats back. I like it, a lot.

here is a diagram of the 4.2 exhaust https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...estion-103561/
I'm sure I've seen a photo of the 5.0 here somewhere. But as I mentioned in my earlier post, I think the problem is that the smaller bore in the 4.2 engine is one of the factors, so no matter what you will lose that going up to the 5.0.
You lose that throb even more with the centre resonator delete, so maybe the resonators were put in to try to keep it.
I was a little disappointed when I did the delete because it became even more a howl, but it sounds awesome when you put your foot down and at least you are hearing it all the time, not just when the revs get up - so I can enjoy it at legal and safe speeds all the time.
