Default Put in neutral without starting?

Happy Pres day.
Is it possible to put a 2010 XK in neutral WITHOUT starting the car? I don't see how to.

Best.

Press the start button without your foot on the brake. This will power up the vehicle, but not start the engine. This will let you move the shifter (but make sure you now have your foot on the brake when you do!).

--> The above does not work on the 2010 XK - screen, radio, lights etc go on, and car does not start (as expected), but more important, the round transmission selector DOES NOT RISE. Therefore, I can not turn it to neutral.

I'm flummoxed.

Best.

Depending on why you need to, I believe you can manually disengage the transmission through a lever under a panel under the cup-holder. This may be too drastic for your needs, and I don't remember the specifics of how it works.

You can turn the car off in neutral and it will stay in neutral. But turning it off in any other gear will return it to park. I don't know of any other options.

If you want to disengage the transmission park brake manually:

In the event of the vehicle requiring recovery, the park lock can be released manually with the use of the emergency park release mechanism. To release the park lock:
  • Remove the trim cover from the rear of the floor console and locate the emergency park release lever.
  • Rotate the locking mechanism of the lever 90 degrees counterclockwise.
  • Apply the footbrake, pull the lever upwards and ensure it is locked in the vertical position.

To re-engage the park lock:
  • Hold the strap on the emergency park release lever, release the latch and lower the lever to the horizontal position.
  • Lock the lever by turning the locking mechanism 90 degrees clockwise.
  • Install the trim cover.

Thanks Muddydog - the above will do.

Thanks Ngarara, more involved than I want (to move car to get items stored in front of it and then push back on level floor - without starting and running it for just moments).

And thanks for the timely responses, as always.

Probably. It's essentially like my STR.

You may not be keen, though...

If you have the EPB, hold its paddle down when turning off the ignition. Leave key in so you can put shift in N. Push car.

You didn't state your model year and it's not listed in your Public Profile. The answer depends on if your XKR is an X100 or X150 and, if the latter, a 4.2L or 5.0L.

Why not just put it in neutral, as described above, and try pushing it?

Doesn't anyone just read their owners manual any more?

Presidents' Day in THIS country is always the 3rd Monday of February ... so this year, it's Monday, February 19th!

Default Update to my question

I do not own an xkr right now but it will be 2007 onwards hopefully a 5 later but may be 4.2. I need to push into garage as i said due to room opening doors.i have tried my current XP’s and when i turn of the ignition the EPB automatically deploys i will look at this owners handbook but am pretty sure its a safety thing and if i can not easily override this feature to allow me to manually push the car the final few feet into the garage it will stop me from purchasing what has been a dream car for me for some time so any help would be appreciated

EPB (i.e. the manually operated handbrake) does not automatically deploy on the 5.0 - I can attest to that. The transmission brake does, because the transmission automatically shifts to Park - unless you put the shifter in Neutral before switch-off. This its the technique required to allow the car to be hauled onto a low-loader.

So, pull up at garage, don't engage the handbrake, put the shifter in Neutral, then switch off. Push car in, close garage doors. This does leave the car sitting with no brakes on, but you could always put a chock behind one wheel.

Just FYI... without battery or with a low or depleted battery you cannot spin the dial to get the car into neutral. Instead you must lift the center arm rest console and underneath the plastic inset where your cupholder is you will find a little tab door held on by an allen screw. Remove that allen screw and door, I believe it is a 4 or 6mm and reach inside where you will find a finger loop to pull and it releases the drive selector so you can now put it in neutral.

This was super helpful! I found myself in this exact scenario when the car abruptly wouldn't start after running errands. What the pull cord does is pull the car out of Park and release the brake. The car is then in neutral by default. The dial selector never rises and, since my car couldn't start, there was no ability to select gears (again, dial didn't rise). I was however able to let the car coast backward to get it towed.
