Default Roof Operation

Hi all, not sure this is the right place, so please move the post or advise if I should:

Just brought the XKR '08 home yesterday. The sales guy almost blew a gasket when I stopped opening the roof at the 1/2 way point. (That is how you get to the Porsche Boxer engine - Service Mode) I did not think it was an issue. He jumped on me and yelled NEVER DO THAT. Is it true that if you stop the process 1/2 way you'll have to do a complete reset? That seems odd. How else can you clean the cabin where the roof is stored?

Thanks in advance,

Carl

Carl,
That salesman gave you good advice.

Click this link and follow the advice from WhiteXKR, a.k.a. Steve, the Jag Wrangler. He's the expert on the soft top and the inventor of what the factory forgot - the soft top remote control and rear window controller:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...issues-240337/

Here's the link to Steve's remote control. I am one of many Forum members who have installed it.

Yes, buy the remote for the top with the window option.
Also, you CAN stop the top in the middle for a few seconds if you NEED to do something, but not more than those few seconds. It'll create a monster problem if something goes wrong.

Just because you might be able to do something on another car doesn’t mean you can on all others….

Default Stopping the top mid cycle

It is definitely not recommended to stop the top during an open or close, but it is not automatically a problem. The car was designed to deal with the driver’s finger falling off the button for a moment, or the driver having a mind change (“oops I didnt realize it was raining….”)

Stopping the top mid-move is a problem mainly because (1) it drains the battery rapidly to keep the hydraulic pump energized in order to hold the top in an intermediate position, and (2) to save the battery the car will cut power to the pump after only a few minutes, at which point the top will flop open or closed as gravity will move it, probably putting it into a different position in the open-close sequence than the controller left it. Once that happens the top has to be reset by releasing the pump and manually folding it all the way open. Which is easier said than done because the pump is in the trunk which can’t be opened unless the tonneau cover is down, which only happens when the fop is all the way folded or deployed to the pre-latch position.

Having a Jag Wrangler controller will avoid this problem, as the roof operation will be a One-Touch operation, no need to hold the button!
