Saying a sad farewell to the XKR...and hello to a new toy.
While a REALLY nice looking car, is it worth that much over my XKR?
I have had two Vipers and loved both of them.... The first one was bone stock but my GTS had 680 wheel horsepower and was a total beast....Two totally different cars the XKR or XK cars are luxury touring cars whereas the Viper is pure speed raw without a lot of frills...The V10 exhaust note is a little bit weird compared to a V8 but makes it up in thrill factor

^It's a shame you didn't own a newer XKR to compare with your Vantage as that would have made for a more fair performance comparison.
I couldn't find a a proper DB9 vs XKR review but I did find this, which is more relevant to my update. Autocar compares the '14 911 Turbo S with a '14 Vantage, and by one of my favorite and trusted reviewers...

That was a fun review. I agree with him on the Aston. They're never the leader in stats on paper, but when it comes to how it steers, sounds, looks, and how you feel driving it. It's the Aston. For me, that is what I want to spend my money on, is for those things. I am not out to win races, the PDK is not going to make go hotter into a corner.
The Aston is a special experience every time I drive it. An event. Just like an Evora is a special event compared to driving a 911. 911 may be faster, but which set keys are you grabbing if you own both?
You and Steve Sutcliffe both hit the nail on the head as to the appeal, and it's some of those emotional aspects that I also find so appealing. My choices have also been influenced by my passion for maximum performance for road course use but in coming years that will no longer be as much a factor and I'll be able to go all in on emotional appeal again. That started with buying a 5 year old XKE when I was 20, and I'm fortunate to have been able to largely maintain that passion for 45 years. Once bit I think you've got it for life!
