Should I be deterred from buying high mileage XKRS?

Default Should I be deterred from buying high mileage XKRS?

It's a fully optioned, 2013 model in Italian racing red... Price is right.
157,000km
That's a lot of driving for a '13...id assume it was driven all year round...? It's an Ontario car...
Opinions...?

Get it inspected by a reliable source before doing something goofy.

Buying a higher mileage car allowed me to get into the XK game. All depends on what you want to do with it and for how long.

This same car was for sale (and obviously sold at that time) last summer at the same used-car dealership. If I recall correctly it had 149,000 KM and an asking price of $49K then. And was discussed in this thread...

............... or it was returned a a lemon? Maybe the dealership took it off sale and drove it for a year?

It isn't the miles, it is the wear.

Miles do not equate linearly to wear.

I have no issue buying a high mileage X150.

I would have issue buying a highly worn X150.

If I was looking at buying that car I would seriously consider buying one of the others he has for sale. The black 2012 is also an XKR-S (if you must have the R-S) listed at ~$55K (if you can spring for the additional $10K)... https://www.kijiji.ca/v-cars-trucks/...ationFlag=true ...note that this one has accident history to the tune of ~$21K if I recall correctly as I looked at this car last year. But the lower mileage offsets that in my opinion. (And $21K in damage would get eaten up pretty quickly with both headlights, a front bumper and a hood.)
And if your budget is lower there is also a nice 2011 XKR 'Vert listed at ~$48K with low KM's of ~21K... https://www.kijiji.ca/v-cars-trucks/...ationFlag=true
The other black XKR 'Vert is a 2013 with (high) ~69K KM's (which makes its price of ~$55K a little high, even though it looks like it has the Black Pack/Speed Pack options.)...https://www.kijiji.ca/v-cars-trucks/...ationFlag=true

If it were my money, I would go for the white 'Vert and add a tune for better performance numbers than the R-S.

I am the opposite. I would take the RS over the R for a premium. There's more than just a tune to the RS and RS is just more special in the long run. Very rare and sought after.

In my book such car should have been written off, but high book value prevented it. $21K buys you major paint work, laser pulling, some mechanical and electrical components. They probably had to weld in entire new front.

My opinion is that you are not asking right questions if you already determined that the price is right, but still asking if 157,000km is a big deal. Mileage shouldn't be the main consideration, instead it should be mechanical condition of the car. The price could only be right if the car is in a good mechanical shape or nearly free.

If the car was maintained, is in a good shape, and everything works, then 150K isn't a big deal. However, at approximately 250,000 km you will start having issues with wear&tear on drive train components - wheel bearings, drive shaft, major suspension components and bushings. Around this mileage you will also see issues with 'always on' driven components - water pump, supercharger pulley, alternator, compressor. Last but not least, in Ontario you will have corrosion issues due to year-round driving - you will need exhaust work, some panel rust will start showing up.

In a high-mileage car, keeping it on the road will be major expense, not buying it. Doubly so if you don't work on it yourself. However, you have at least 50K left before it becomes an issue/consideration.

This is from a point of view of well-sorted car that was cared for. As 157,000km is plenty miles to run even Toyota into the ground if you don't maintain it. So the key question you should be asking is how it got to 157,000km - sliding smoothly and with care, or one Quick Lube a year at a time?

The XK series of cars are not welded. They are riveted and glued together. (Only the rear roof-line of the coupe is welded.)

The XK series is an all aluminum body/chassis car. The panels will not rust.

Corrosion can happen. I have seen on aluminum bodied Jags. May not be "rust", but you don't want whatever it is...

Jaguar regardless is not a Toyota. If you want the best XKRS possible be patient and the right one will appear. Of course it is not a regularly sold car....but our cars take mucho time in general to sell regardless of the model. Be patient and look. Stay AWAY from high mileage cars! There are enough cars to find if you are patient that will meet your expectations. These are not sought after cars and patience will be on your side. Good luck and let us know how you make out... Except for Gold, most anything is simply "corrosion resistant".

But then I was thinking, it has 20000 km more than my 2011 grocery getter.
Who dies that to a XK-RS? !

375 miles per week.

75 miles per day on a 5 day work week.

37 miles one way commute.

Seems like someone wanted something comfortable that they enjoyed and worked the next town over.

If you can get pictures of the car on a lift and it isn't rusting I would consider regular driving of 75 miles per day to mean the car isn't suffering from short trip woes.

I put 600 miles on my Corvette the first week and a half, and I work from home!

I was putting an average of 230 miles a week on my XK, and I had another car I would some times drive, and some days work from home. Now that I only work from home it gets driven perhaps once a week, sometimes out to 9 days.

If it has been cared for, if it is in good condition, I do not see the miles as a detriment. I would far rather have a well cared for car that has been driven and taken care of, than one that has not been driven and taken care of.

Look under it, poke around, if it drives well then the mileage shouldn't be an issue.

I have bought the same model of car multiple times, I had to do a lot of work on a low mileage Porsche 944 because of dry rot. A higher mileage 944 that had been mechanic owned had a lot less issues than the low mileage one.

Check it for issues, check if you like it, if it drives well, has good records, and is in good shape then mileage becomes secondary to these things.

It is my observation from reading mechanical history of 5.0L Jaguars on carfax.

Time, not being garage kept, and short use tend to be the primary factors that tire these cats.

Mileage tends to effect tires, supercharger, waterpump.

Not being garage kept effects interior degradation, paint degradation, possibly other degradation.

Time seems to effect anything plastic or rubber.

If this car were to have issues it would likely be from other factors than just the miles driven.

I like that on Corvettes it stores engine revolutions in addition to miles, time spent at 6,000RPM is a lot more stress than time spent at 1,500RPM.

Maybe then it's worth a good going over...
It's a car I would be willing to keep for many, many years, taking excellent care of it, of course...
For a 2013 R-S, the price can't be beat.
It's an hours drive from me, but probably worth a look. Service wise, surely tires and brakes have been done at least. A service history would make me feel much better about it.
