Smart key not found ?
I went out this morning to start the car. Smart key on my belt as always, step on the brake and press the START button...message comes up on the info center "smart key not found...insert into slot". So I open the console and open the little door to the slot, remove the fob from the key and place the fob into the opening and press down. Hit the start button again and car starts...Remove the fob and button up the console, shut the car off, wait a minute. Start car again and it starts...shut it off, try it again...smart key not found. We only have the one smart key
Any ideas what is happening?...is there a quick fix or do I need to go to Jag?

UPDATE: When in doubt read the manual!
I did and found it may have been a low battery in the fob. Manual gives part# of battery CR2032....sounds familiar so I look at my toll pass. Same battery, put in the new battery in the fob.....car starts right up, no error message now.

You can pick the battery up at Radio Shack, the owners manual will tell you how to take the FOB apart, pretty easy. Just make sure you put the battery back in correctly or you'll be taking it apart again...don't ask how I know this...lol

When I bought my car, it only had one smart key. And when I drove it, I noticed that the odometer didn't change. After getting the car and leaving, the lost smart key was in the dock. Took it out, mileage then showed what it really was. About 1000 miles more than what I bought it at and what showed on paperwork.

Sorry about resurrecting an old thread, but is there any way to determine if my smart key has already had the C2P17158 upgraded battery cover? Seems to be operating ok at the moment, but if I can pickup the repair piece for only $10-15, that's certainly better than being stranded someday. I've taken the unit apart and looked for a part number, but don't see anything that would indicate that I've got the upgraded version. Is anyone familiar with what the difference might be and what I should be looking for?

Well, when I got this car I had the "Key not found" message, but then I was getting all kinds of crazy messages because the battery was deadish. I saw posts about the fob battery early on and I happen to keep fresh CR2032 batteries around, so I just went ahead and replaced the battery (and also replaced the main battery in the car). It's been ok, but I'd like to be proactive and be sure my fob was upgraded at some point.
Is there any way of knowing, by looking at the fob, whether the upgrade was done? Visually, the cover that holds the battery looks fine, but I suspect there was some design change in the improved fob cover piece... anyone know what the distinguishing characteristics might be between the old and new?
