Default Smartkey repair and refurbishment

The Smartkey that came with my 2007 XK had seen better days. The latch that holds the mechanical key in the fob was broken, and the chrome was peeling and marred.

I figured I would have to replace it, but much to my delight I found that Jaguar parts carries all the little bits to repair it. You can purchase the spring and latch, the chrome end pieces, the keypad and the back all separately, and all for relative pocket change.

So I went about purchasing a new spring and latch ($2.05 at Gaudin) and and new chrome end pieces ($8.10 at Gaudin).

To perform the repair simply pry off the chrome end pieces.

Then the broken latch tab is revealed.

Slide the spring on the new part. Here you can see the old broken part next to the new one:

Then compress the spring an snap the lever back in place. Squeeze the shell back together and snap on the new end caps. As good as new for about 10 bucks:

Here are the part numbers:
C2P15136 - Chrome end piece set
C2P15137 - Latch and spring
C2P17158 - Back with new battery
C2P15134 - Keypad (VIN # to B12814)
C2P15135 - Keypad (VIN # from B12815)

The rings have been available for almost as long as the XK has been around and Jaguar issued a TSB all about them.

I bought some rings on EBAY when I first bought my car because they seem to get damaged easily.

Used car dealers ought to replace them as one XKR I test drove had really badly damaged rings and as that was the first thing I saw before I test drove the car it didn't give me a favourable impression from the start.

Default Another Solution

Although my SmartKey wasn't broken, the chrome pieces were scarred. I carry my SmartKey in the same pocket as my iPhone, and since I didn't want to scratch my iPhone screen, I went on eBay and bought a rubber key fob "jacket" made especially for my 2009 XK from "thejacketstore.com" for $7.00 with free shipping! It looks great, fits tight, and they come in 10 colors. See Jaguar Protective Rubber Remote Cover Smart Key Case Jacket Cover Fob Control 12 | eBay.

PS. I keep the key from my other fob in my wallet just in case my Cat allows some electric gremlin to lock me out!

How perfectly sensible of Jag. I'm genuinely impressed. If only I could find similar for my manual gearshift knob!

WhiteXKR,
Excellent write up, but a week too late for me, I had already ordered two new keys a week ago from E Bay! BLAST!

Never the less, as I happen to be working in Las Vegas, I called Gaudin Jag and spoke to Mark who very kindly put a 'repair set' aside for me. Upon picking them up I found he had invoiced me as for an On Line purchase, no tax. Total cost $21.24.
A great find and a very economoical way to refubish those keys so easily ruined in normal use.
Many Thanks,
White Bear.
