Default Smog tech can't read VIN # with OBD2 scanner - RESOLVED

I brought my recently purchased, from another state, 2013 xkr in for a smog check
Previous owner installed a new battery right before i got the car. I brought the car to get a smog test and the tech asked if the battery was changed or disconnected recently. I told him yes a new battery was installed 10 miles ago. He said the obd2 scanner cant read the vin number and i have to drive it 100 miles and bring it back in for a free retest. Im not having much luck on the internet finding info on this. He said its a common problem....has this happened to anyone else here?

So it failed the test because the smog guy couldn't read the VIN? - Not sure how changing a battery would affect reading the VIN#.

When the battery is disconnected it resets all the emissions self-tests. Most only take a few miles to retest themselves, but two sometimes take 100-200 miles to complete. The EVAP system usually takes the longest, but the CATS can sometimes also take quite awhile. Maybe the VIN will display once those tests are complete, but it doesn't matter anyway UNTIL those tests complete.
Go drive it, have fun. Go back after many miles. Oh, and starting with 3/4 tank of fuel down to 1/4 tank is the most useful for the EVAP self tests.

Just checked my Dash/Command OBD2 - it does read the VIN - never checked that before. I don't see how after changing the battery the VIN would be unreadable.

Gotta check the I/M status for the self-tests, they aren't codes.

Not mine, just a generic FOXWELL readout:

You guys are right i just saw a video I need to drive it and then check with my scanner the I/M status. I read that a drive cycle has to be completed because alot of ppl disconnect their battery to clear a trouble code and immediately bring it in for a smog test.
I think the smog tech was trying to simplify it by saying "it cant read the VIN" instead of having to explain what I/M status was...

my new 2013 XKRS got a new battery and it took 75 miles before it would pass smog. Not sure of the details but it is a combo of miles and cycles i think

Maybe the station's tool just doesn't even try to read the VIN if the monitors aren't set.

That information is NOT applicable to X150.

It is taken from the Powertrain DTC Summaries section of JTIS (Jaguar Technical Information System) which applies to models up to 2006.With the introduction of X150, the DRIVE CYCLE procedures were greatly simplified and moved to the Workshop Manuals. A Short and a Long Drive Cycle are defined for 4.2 and 5.0 models. I include the relevant extracts here:

1. SHORT DRIVE CYCLE - 4.2. litre:

2. LONG DRIVE CYCLE - 4.2. litre:

3. SHORT DRIVE CYCLE - 5.0 litre:

4. LONG DRIVE CYCLE - 5.0 litre:

All very much simpler and quicker than the earlier procedures.

Graham

update: Drove the car 40 miles and checked MIL readiness with a pocket scanner and it only showed 1 incomplete and it was evap. Tech told me as long as its just the evap they can test it and it passed!
Excellent day.
