VIN check
Hello, after years of thinking I'm now ready to buy a XK8. I've found a car that looks nice and seems to have a good price. The car has recently been imported from France to Sweden so there is not much information available about the car here. I've spent €15 on an "AutoDNA" report that was completely empty. I will travel 450km at saturday to look at the car. So if someone that has access to Jaguars service history database could check the VIN: SAJJGAED4AH036202 and come back with the latest odometer reading (and date), and if possible information about the

Ooops, touched the submit button by mistake..
So if possible I also want to know the engine status, if tensioners has been updated or if engine has been replaced etc. And finally, if there is anything stramge in the records for this vehicle, I would like to know it. Thanks in advance! Best Regards Lucas

Correct VIN?
Lucke, the VIN SAJJGAED4AH036202 doesn't appear to be a correct number, at least on the websites here in the United States. When I ran your number, each site said "Not found" I then ran my VIN, and all was good.
I noticed that when comparing our two VINs, yours has letters where mine has numbers.
SAJJGAED2 - yours
SAJGX2040- mine
I do not know if that is the difference between countries, but please verify that you have the correct numbers by comparing them on the title, on the door jam and windshield of your car. Looks like it could be a typo on the title(?)

The VIN I have comes from the title. I have also troubles to get it decoded in the VIN decoders that I have found.. Strange. Either it's another VIN system in Europe or it is wrong VIN in the title. I will compare the title with the VIN stamped on the car at saturday. Maybe it is wrong in the title, the car was registered in Sweden just a couple of months ago. In case it is wrong it can be good to have that corrected by the guy who imported the car to avoid troubles in future.. I will call a Jaguar service center when I'm sure about the VIN to see what thay have in their records for this car.

Hi Lucke,
I've just checked the VIN on mine, which is also European market, and it is very similar: SAJJGAED3AR020869
..so I think you're probably OK with the format. Do check what's on the registration document against the number on the vehicle's windscreen tag. I've read quite a few posts suggesting cross-checking here: - turned out to be a good idea in my case as some careless soul has managed to translate the first zero into a 'D' on the registration document.
On-line VIN decoders are as much use as an ashtray on a motor bike unless it's for an American vehicle (apparently the US has strict rules around the VIN format).
I found a 2012 post from GGG who is one of the tireless moderators here stating that specific detail can't be drawn from the VIN. As his post suggests, your best bet is to contact a dealer to get the information you seek, although how much they will tell 'a man on the phone' will depend on how helpful they are generally.
You're unlikely to get information which may be considered personal to previous owners, but you should be able to find out what the service history looks like.
Hope this helps,
Mike

Talk to a dealer, they don't have to give you names and the like of prev owners, but shoul dbe able to tell you what if any work was done in Jag dealers. They do hear in the states, some of them, so maybe you kind find a friendly dealer there that would. They may not do it unless you can show them a title that YOu own the car though.

Last saturday I was looking at the car but it was not in the condition I expected so I will continue my search for an other XK8.. Almost evertything in the interior was broken. The electrical system was totally living it's own life. It was stated in the ad that the car was draining battery power and when I connected the battery I understood why, I could hear water boiling inside a fuse/relay box below the windscreen at the RH side. Etc...

Even though you have decided this vehicle is not worth further consideration, decoding the VIN is still an interesting exercise as it could help anyone searching for the answer in future.
This decode applies to X100.
PREFIX 1 to 4 - World Manufacturing Identifier
SAJJ = Jaguar
PREFIX 5 - Model Range
G = X100 (XK8/XKR)
PREFIX 6 - Class
A = Base Spec
PREFIX 7 - Body Variant
E = 2 Door Coupe
PREFIX 8 - Engine Variant
D = 4.0 Litre
PREFIX 9 - Transmission & Steering
4 = Auto LHS
PREFIX 10 - Model or Year Change
A = ?? (see note below)
PREFIX 11 - Emission Control
H = 95 RON, Emission C
PREFIX 12 to 17 - Production Serial Number
036202
This is all that can be derived from the VIN. It does NOT give any information on optional extras etc.
NOTE: I think this PREFIX 10 must be wrong. The Year code began with letter A in 1980 ending with Y in 2000 before using numbers 1 to 9 from 2001 to 2009 and starting with letter A again in 2010.
