Default steering wheel tilt?

2008 XK. didn't get an operations manual with the car and not sure how the tilt switch on the side of the column works. if I turn it counter clockwise to 'auto' the dash indication shows but the wheel doesn't move. is there something else needed to be done? is it a power operation and maybe a fuse dead?

If the switch is at "auto" and does not move that is because it is already in the position set by the last driver. Use the switch to position it as you want it to be and then program it with the switch on the door. And you so need an owner's manual; these are complicated cars if you don't have one. Easily available on eBay.

The auto, means when you open the car door, it will raise the steering wheel to its maximum height, and restore it to the last preset when you start the car. Its a nice feature to give a person more legroom for entry/exit if needed. I'm tall enough that to see the gauges, its very near the top of its range anyway.

There is a small 4 way toggle that actually adjusts the steering wheel.

thanks. figured out how to toggle the wheel in and out, up and down. that's probably all I ever need to do. probably have more questions until I get the owners manual.

While you're waiting for the Owners Handbook to arrive, see the third Sticky on the first page of this Forum titled Handbook Download and my post #27 on page 2 of that thread.

I don't believe the manual is available online at Jaguar. You're stuck with Topix or online purchase.

Topix can be browsed without registering and the on-line owners manual is available without charge, certainly in the UK and I would imagine worldwide. Not quite as handy as a full manual download, I agree, but better than nothing and I did make this point to Jaguar but they seemed un-repentant - it seems some people think that it is now completely an on-line world. I beg to differ.
