Undertray and Splash Shield attachment to cross member- clips, push rivets, or bolts?
I was recently under the car yesterday and noticed something strange about the undertray and how it attached to the body and radiator splash shield... they were attached to each other using 2x ribbed plastic clips, but hanging down and not attached to the engine support bar.
Here's the instructions from another thread post:
Here's the under tray:
C2P21918
And here's the radiator splash shield:
C2P25349
Here's the clips I found on my panels, that isn't strong enough to stick into the cross member slots
Here's a WAY TOO LONG video someone took with a similar problem:
So, what's the deal? Are the push rivets my car has something from a previous owner or oil change shop? Are there supposed to be speed nuts here for threaded fasteners? Anyone do their own oil change that can comment how these plastic shields are fixed to the body?
What do the screws attach to? Is there a speed nut in the cross member that I'm missing?
When I was under the car yesterday I saw a slot that the push rivet would fit into (but doesn't), but it seems like a plastic retaining clip could go there as well, for a screw to thread into.
Everything points to an oil change and the OEM fasteners went missing so they used push rivets they had in the shop to finish the job and sent the PO on their way.
Pause the second video @ 3:22, gives you a pretty clear shot of the snap in fastener that takes the screws... It's a metal fastener, I haven't looked close but probably a U style nut or a cage nut

The body has two square holes which each have a white nylon "snap-in" nut inserted. The rear of the undertray is then secured to these using a self tapping screw and a washer through the recessed holes. This is what they look like:
I had one "snap-in" nut break on my 2007 XK and had a hard job finding a replacement - Jaguar don't list them.

The spring nuts are listed under the XF parts list my dealer knew this and saved a lot of searching
Those look like license plate inserts, but I would definitely prefer to go with a metal spring nut over the plastic insert, given how much road debris that part would see, I bet the plastic insert would crack in no time. They only last about a year holding license plate screws.
If that looks correct to those that still have the OEM fasteners installed, they must be the right parts.
Yes, I was planning on just using a washer to increase the diameter of the head. Given that the parts diagram doesn't show any washer, I'm thinking those fasteners are actually for something else (like attaching #9 in the diagram below). I wish Jaguar's part diagrams and illustrations weren't such garbage. Probably the worst I've ever come across.

Thanks Ian. Do you know what diagram your part is shown on? I can't seem to find it anywhere.
I west to Jaguar of the palm beaches. Parts guy looked it up said it was in the XF parts list not the XK I did the same thing buying the alternator nut spring first. He was only able to find it after he matched it up to the one I brought in.
That C2D20870 pops up in a couple of different places in Jaguar’s parts catalog, including in the front bumper for the XK. Oddly enough, that part number is in the catalog for the XK front bumper but isn’t actually pictured in the diagram. The best picture I could find was in the engine undertray section for an XF model. The #21 (C2P23640) looks like it would be the fastener you need for that C2D20870 nut.
