I used these small, inexpensive ($17.99/pair) gas spring dampers to fix my antique dropdown desk, and thought they might work to fix your broken glovebox lid. If you're an Amazon Prime member, there's no risk because returns are free. I haven't done any measurements. Only one would be required, as the glovebox lid isn't heavy. It'll keep the lid level at a 90° angle when fully open.

Running down the maintenance list ..tonight it was the left hand engine mount and left hand Valve cover .

 

Today I had my annual post-cancer-thyroidectomy scans. Had been on a low-iodine diet for 10 days, so I decided that a run to the McDonald's drive-thru for some salty burgers & fries was next on the schedule.

Hopped in the Gray Ghost. Put the top down and enjoyed some fresh air on the way there. Got some smiles and thumbs-up gestures from a sweet octogenarian couple walking down the street during my short excursion. Was able to legally blow past a Camry driving 10mph below the speed limit on a 2-lane road in about 1.5 seconds.

I also managed to keep from dropping any fries in between the seats.
All in all, I'd have to call this a pretty good day.

What were the indications you needed a new mount? Noise on speedbumps? On gunning the engine? something else?

How many miles? Did you use a Jag part, or aftermarket?

I normally do a load test on the engine to see there is movement (engine in gear one foot firmly pressed on brake the other giving some quick revs to the throttle) this time it wasnt required I could literally hear the engine moving around under WOT

I used after market part however xj, f type , xf , s-type all run same mounts

BTW, this is one case where it's nice to have the hood open forward -- you can gun the engine and see it move.

Mines not quite a R nor a 4.2 lol I'm kind of in the middle I've got a 4.4 that redlines at 7100rpm so it might be those revs that are doing the damage ))) and obviously it all depends on how these things are driven

 

Checked tranny fluid level, was a bit low. Added 700ml, all good now.

Even on a lift, it was... fiddly.

 

At idle the engine had a deep rattle rumble from the front end. There was no overheating detected or warning lights displayed.
The mechanic put in a new water pump, flushed the cooling system, and refilled it with coolant.
Although the car only has 48, 100 miles on the odometer the pump's bearings were shot and the gaskets were weeping.
No rumble noises from the front of the engine now. Hopefully, this pump will survive at least 48,00 miles also.

 

After many delays, I finally finished up my valley hoses and 10% pulley upgrade. I seriously don't want to do those hoses a third time!

Yes it is, you can tell because all the Seattle corrosion and such. Mine is nice and shiny.
I figured I'd do whatever I can since it's already this far apart, so the injectors are in an ultrasonic and while the plugs aren't bad shape-wise, they are still a bit dusty so the wire wheel for those.
Someone told me the coils are probably good so I'll just ohm those out and see if anything looks out of place.
THEN I get to put it together after I DIDN'T take it apart, so I'll be kind of clueless as to what the heck I'm doing. Plus new gaskets. WHERE do I find some? The lower intakes are easy, but how many others are there that I don't know about? SNG doesn't have any, and neither does the 'regular' suppliers I use.

Right on, looks like you are making good progress. When I had my valley hoses done all the gaskets were available for the local Jag dealer. I don't think they had them in stock locally. Probably came from Toronto.

After looking at various threads I came up with a parts list for the dealership parts dept as what they quoted seems to be missing a few.

Sorry Steve, related to this picture: do you have a wheel from a late XJ model on the rear? what size, 9x19 or 10x19? Do you happen to have more photos with the xj-rims available?

I have the chance to buy a set of those rims for very little money, so I´m thinking of buying them as a spare set. I like the look. Thx in advance!

 

They are off f-type having said that the offset is perfect for the 4.2 however for a 5l the rear offset is way off ....in regards to XJ wheels you are looking at as far as my memory serves me xj wheels arent staggered
