Default XK Convert – Roof Rattle

I was reading about the latching motor in another thread and saw that there is a nylon gear.

My 2008 XK roof will rattle when I go over a large dip or rise, as if it is not secure.

It is secure. Could a worn nylon gear allow enough movement to permit this to occur?

Hi, the nylon gear is within the gearbox and transfers the drive 90 degrees and provides two splined drives for the latching gear driveshafts. This gear being plastic wears or breaks and will prevent the hood latching or unlatching but assuming the motor drives ok I'm not sure why the hood should rattle as the mechanism tensions the hood and operates the latching hooks. It's easy to take the plastic shroud from the hood header, just a few screws and clips and you can see the mechanism move and maybe something has come adrift. I changed my gear for the brass type which are easily available and work well but they are considerably noisier in operation.
