Default XKR 5.0 Oil Recommendations

Morning all,

It's thaf time of year where my XKR is due an oil change. What brand and viscosity would you all suggest for the 5.0 engine? I've seen mixed reports on 5w20 vs 0w20 dependent upon the year the vehicle was manufactured.

Thanks,

Russ

Russ,

As you are in the UK (we ask members to show their location for a reason) I will avoid mentioning any of the USA brand options that members favour.

The recommended specification is:

SAE 5W-20 engine oil meeting specification WSS-M2C925-A. If unavailable, SAE 0W-20 engine oil meeting Jaguar Land Rover specification STJLR.51.5122 may be used.

If you want to stick with the Jaguar recommended brand, you are likely to find Castrol Edge Professional SAE 5W-20 is presently hard to find in the UK although there are many sources discounting the SAE 0W-20 alternative.

Thank you for your reply Graham, I must admit I thought I had completed my profile previously but have now reviewed and updated accordingly.

Having had a scout around it would appear EuroCarParts/CarParts4Less stock Shell Helix 5W-20 Ultra Professional which meets WSS-M2C925-A specification, I would be interested to hear if any other forum users have used Shell Helix and if so could offer their opinion on the product.

Russ,

Welcome to the Forum. You'll find lots of helpful members here and the answers to your questions ... if you know how to find them. Asking "Which oil?" is and you'll get more opinions than dogs have fleas.

How do you quickly find answers to your questions? Read my Post #3 in this thread:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...opular-240992/

Stuart

P.S. If it meets the spec, what difference does the brand make without objective comparative scientific data? The condition of your engine probably makes more difference than the brand of oil, as does the time and mileage between oil and filter changes.

P.S. #2. I just noticed that you're not a newbie, and joined the Forum in 2019. I'm sure that you know how to search this Forum, but others may find my search advice to be helpful.

I checked there before my first reply as they had an unbeatable offer on Castrol Edge last October .......

........ probably unrepeatable at that price so I immediately ordered another 8 for the next oil change.

I saw they are presently offering Shell Helix 5W-20 Ultra Professional which meets the recommended specification and should therefore be an acceptable alternative. The only reason JLR push the Castrol brand is because of a long standing commercial association.

Graham, Stuart,
Great to see you both in a world that is upside down.

Stuart, I can instantly make it up to you with this contribution. Discovered a fantastic trick for the wireless backup camera.
Because its a wide-angle zero-light camera, with zero wires...you can use it for an inspection camera. Try it, you will never get on your back again (as if you do).
But imagine its usefulness on the side of a road.

Sorry for the threadjack, first one I read, saw you both, could not contain my reaction.

Russ, firstly you say you've an XKR yet your signature states 'XK' get that changed m8

Secondly the correct oil for the UK climate in our 5.0 car is I believe:

Castrol Edge Professional E C5 0w-20 (meeting STJLR.03.506)

That's what's been used in my last two services and I'm looking at a bottle now

My Indy sells the 1l bottles for £10+VAT which is by far the cheapest I've seen on-line by way of example this is the cheapest on UK ebay

Good to see you're back! Yes, CV turned the world upside down, but Newton's 3rd Law cuts both ways and vaccines are turning the world rightside up.

I actually found the search advice very useful myself to be honest. I also take your point re: spec vs brand along with time/mileage intervals, I have just invested in a Mityvac 7201 fluid extractor which I am hoping will make oil changes on the XKR almost a dream in comparison to draining using the sump plug, I'll report back my thoughts following the pumps first use.

Signature updated I have opted to go for 5w-20 on this occasion but will certainly consider using 0w-20 in future oil changes. Sounds like you have a good indy there to lock in such a low price on Castrol Edge.

Russ -
Having switched over to DIY changes about a year ago, I was actually going to do a post on this! Actually shot some video for those who've not done it but haven't gotten around to it.
Anyway....
You're going to love the Mityvac. I chose it was well. Worth the $ and very well made. EZ to use.
It comes with three tubes. You'll be using the largest one, press it down over the extraction tube about two inches.
It's recommended that you open the filter canister about a turn or so before starting, probably to facilitate oil drainage. WELL worth it to buy a filter wrench cap (use with a ratchet) for for dealing with the canister.
FYI, assuming you fully warm up the engine, even after letting the car sit for 10 minutes that oil is HOT coming out. The tube gets very hot but doesn't seem to be an issue.
You'll have to "recharge" the extractor with a few more pumps from time to time as the oil's draining.
The only design flaw here is the filter holding canister on the engine is mounted on an angle,so a little oil remains in there. Once you've removed the old filter, I use the mityvac as a kind of vacuum cleaner to suck most of that out, and a paper towel for the rest.
Replace the filter, fill 'er up with oil and you're good to go! Really the easiest oil change I've ever done.
FYI, I go to Blauparts.com and get an "oil change kit" for our cars-- 8 litres of Ravenol oil (fancy German stuff, passes muster with the forum members here) and it includes a Mahle filter. And they always have some kind of special. I pay between $90 and $100, depending, and that includes tax and shipping. And there's a heavy plastic bag in there that works perfectly for trash and waste collection.
Mityvac, a filter wrench cap, and the Ravenol oil change kit and you're set!

Reading your post, it looks like it was your video that I originally watched on YouTube which led me down the Mityvac route, I didn't think at first I would be able to get my hands on a Mityvac with you being based in the US and in the UK myself...however Amazon came up with the goods and delivered next day. It really is an excellent piece of kit.

I completely agree with your statement regarding it being the easiest oil change you have ever done, I couldn't believe how simple it was, no jacking the car up, rolling round on the floor etc. The X150 really has been designed with ease of oil service in mind, I'll be looking at 6 month service intervals now given the ease and relative cost, for those in the UK I purchased a Mahle OEM Oil Filter and Mahle OEM Pollen filter from Opie Oils and 8l of Shell Helix 5W-20 Ultra Professional which meets WSS-M2C925-A specification from CarParts4Less for near as dammit £100 for all three items Inc. shipping. The Jaguar Specialist I used last year to service my XKR last year quoted £90.74 alone for the oil and pollen filter plus VAT (labour was in addition to this), when I inspected the old filters whilst completing the service to my vehicle I noticed they were MANN branded filters which can be purchased from CarParts4Less for under £38...feels to me like the specialist is charging for genuine JLR parts, fitting pattern parts and marking the parts cost up by 300%.

Onto this weekends job...Supercharger Coolant Pump replacement now my X150 has started to throw Restricted Performance on the dash after opening the car up a little followed by P2601 error code when I read the codes after.

In the simplest terms it is an electrically driven pump (not belt drive like the water pump) which is used to cool air intake temps at the intercooler if I have read correctly.

I have chosen to complete a small mod and install a Bosch pump rather than the oem Jaguar Hella pump (£85 vs £350), the flow rate of the Bosch pump is supposedly better than the Hella pump so can reduce intake temps slightly however primarily my choice for using the Bosch pump is a cost based decision. There is quite alot of information regarding the pump change on here and JaguarForum.com

Here's a link to a thread detailing some information when a forum member changed the pump on their XFR:

Yeah, since he updated his signature AFTER he posted without one, that signature was added afterwards by the forum automatically.
There is no need to be rude in here, you know. Well, SOMETIMES there is a need but not for something so trivial but also a very helpful suggestion.

I put some Valvoline restore&protect in my XKR-S to get the benefits to clean sludge from the engine for using it.I figure as long as its 5w20, it's the correct weight for the oil to work properly
