Question 01 XK8 transmission

Hi everyone I have an 82 XJ6 and love it but I just bought an 01 XK8 with 130,000 miles on it. Everything seems OK but I wanted to do maintenance on it. I read through your forums to find out what should be done. I got to trans portions and see some conflicting info on fluids. But my problem is this. I couldn't find the fill plug on the left side of trans as was indicated by many. However up a little on the right side close to the bell housing I found what looks like a drain plug.Could this be my fill plug?

Welcome to the forum carsami,

I've moved your question from General Tech Help forum to XK8/XKR forum. Members here with the same model XK8 as you have will advise on the ZF5HP24 transmission drain and fill.

When you get a minute, please follow this link New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the New Member Area - Intro a MUST forum and post some info about yourself and your vehicles for all members to see. In return you'll get a proper welcome and some useful advcie about posting to the forum.

Graham

The fill plug is at the right rear, just about over the exhaust pipes. I think it's a 8mm hex.
Be sure you can loosen it before you remove the drain plug. There is lots of info on fluid change on the forum.

Thank you for the input but I'm afraid the info is not correct. There are no 8mm hex bolts on right or left side that looks anything like a fill plug. There are a couple on each side but they are more than half way up the side. What I can tell you about the transmission is it has a metal pan. On the right side just behind the bell housing it has an 18mm bolt angled down that looks like a drain plug you would find on an oil pan. They must have put different transmissions in some of these XK8s. At this point I can find nothing else I would call a fill plug. I will hold off taking it out to see if anyone has more insight into this because I don't want to take anything out that might cause a problem.

If you have a 2001 XK8 you have a ZF 5HP24 transmission. This illustration may help you find the fill plug.

Now if you have a 2001 XKR, you do have a different transmission which has a fill tube.

There is also an outside chance also that someone added an aftermarket dipstick: 5HP24 Dip Stick

Thank You so much WhiteXKR the image helped immensely, there it is hiding back from the protruding lip. In the mean time I pulled the valve covers to find plastic tensioners and have purchased new metal ones. And the work goes on. Thank you

Finished with the upgrades on my XK8 and I couldn't be happier. At cold start it had a slight chatter and even when worm it didn't idol as smooth as my XJ6, but now Sweet. This cat came with the improved sound system and navigational system. the only two options you could get on this pretty cat. Does anyone know where I can get the manuals that tell how to operate them. I don't need them but they would be nice to have.
Now that it's done I may have time this week to take some pictures and learn how to download them. I guess I'm just old school. I must say this is a good entry for me and the internet. Thanks.

carsami,

The link: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...ts-data-29800/
is a wealth of information that is found in the stickies at the top of this section. Find the 4th 'download' on the page and it will take to the Topix site. Enter your model number and year then click on the OWNERS option in the top menu and you can access the manuals. Then spend some time checking out the rest of the thread. Much of what you will want know is there.
