'00 XKR BPM/INST no communication
Hello all...I'm trying to help my local Jag Tech diagnose a problem he encountered after he replaced the timing chain adjusters on my poor XKR. They also replaced the left bank wiring harness as it was rather crumbly. He tells me the instrument cluster is not working and he can not shift it out of park without using a screwdriver to release the latch mechanism. Of course, none of this was a problem when I delivered it to the dealership on a rollback 6 months ago to R&R the timing chain adjusters. His suggestion is to send the instrument cluster and/or BPM to be refurbished. I suggested more diagnostics. He says that he can't get communication with the BPM. I'm not sure what type diagnostic system they use there, but I'm beginning to suspect he may not have been born when my car was built.
I found a service bulletin about bad solder on instrument circuit board dated Oct 2000 but don't think that is very relevant, also threads about poor connections at instrument cluster connectors which seem more relevant.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The shift interlock is a safety feature to avoid shifting into gear without your foot on the brake. The control module knows that based on the input of the brake switch, which is notoriously weak (fails all the time). It is possible your brake switch is bad, but would be an unfortunate coincidence with all this work. Certainly would not explain the issues with the IC.
What is wrong with the IC? Have all the fuses been checked? Can the diagnostic reader get any codes at all? Various control modules are operating on 3 separate bus technologies. Can your tech read data from at least one control module in each tech (SCP, ISO-9141 and CAN). The IC also hosts a bus bridge and needs to be functional.
Another quick procedure is a "hard reset" to make sure all the control modules get a complete power down...

fmertz is more diplomatic than I. Brittle wiring is understandable, but totally unrelated faults after a job has been done?
What is the instrument pack not doing other than allegedly blocking the gear shift?
+1 on his advice: bring the codes back here (actual codes, not any 'interpretation') if a hard reset has no effect.
" If something is suddenly broken after a job it's probably related to the job."

I haven't talked to the tech since I posted, but I did email him a link about hard resetting plus several links to threads found on this forum. One by DevonDavid about CAN Network Integrity Check without WDS (which I think will solve the problem). I couldn't (or didn't understand) his answer when I asked the tech what diagnostic system he was using. All I understood was that he didn't have many resources for diagnosing the problem & that Jaguar's tech people wouldn't talk to them about the "old models". He says he's checked all fuses & the brake switch. The car will run but the IC is dead (like no power). I asked if there were any codes & he said there's no communication with the BPM. After many hours reading posts, I am convinced it is a terminal corrosion problem causing a failure of the CAN BUS system. My car sat outside at the dealership for 6 months thru 3 monsoon like rain storms. I am convinced it is a moisture problem with connectors. Thanks fmertz & michaelh for your input. My worse attribute is electrics so it makes perfect since to me for that to be my XKRs problem! I will get the codes form the service rep and post them here.
It seems the tech is using IDS/SSD 155.03.001 and the only code is P1632 'CAN loss of throttle data'. From the Jaguar wiring diagram copies the service rep has sent me, I think the tech is on the right track. It looks like he's using DevonDavids CAN Network Diagnostics without WDS to track down the CAN BUS failure.
