02 XKR Seat Fire
Customer car comes in with clear thick oily fluid dripping out of passenger seat. Dripped on top of seat module and caught fire burning the bottom of the seat. Does the seat have some sort of fluid in? Can't be from the top hoses can it?
I am not aware of any fluid in the seat, I've had mine apart a few times, for lumbar and headrest repairs. My guess is someone spilled something or it could be the top fluid, if that is the case there would probably be evidence of it elsewhere. Usually the console gets drenched so check out the trans tunnel underneath the gear surround and trim. - I do not know if the car is RHD or LHD but the hoses are routed from the latch down the left A-pillar and down the left side of the trans tunnel then the cross the trans tunnel at the front of the back seat (all references are as seated in the car) So if it is a LHD car it would be unlikely that the passenger seat gets drenched, but you never know, and I am certainly not an expert on hydraulics or fluid dynamics.
My guess would be that the module caught fire and melted the foam into a goo that burns. I must say that I never heard of any module catching fire before though. I suggest that the seat heater shorted and caused the fire.
The only other fluid source I've heard of leaking inside the front of the car is the rear view mirror. Have no idea if it could have drained to the area in question or if it's flamable ?? Just throwing it out there.
I'm sorry, that was a thoughtless remark. I have worked on these modules. Everything about them is low current, and they are protected by a fuse. I can't imagine a fire there. Do you have seat heaters? Do you think that was the problem? Was the car setting unused when the fire started? Tell us more.

dunno... I heard its highly acidic so I removed mine about a year ago. it had a lava lamp look.
I don't remember when the passenger seat weight pressure sensor was introduced (from VIN??) but it is a fluid filled membrane with a pressure sensor attached. Perhaps this has failed and caused your problems??????
