Default 1997 XK8 engine in a 2001 XK8

I have a low mileage A26 engine from a 1997 XK8. I just bought a 2001 XK8 with a blown engine. Timing chain broke. Would it be possible to put my 97 engine in my 2001 A27 car? Or does anyone want to swap my A26 for a A27?

Yes, the engines can be swapped . . . if you have a lot of money . . . and time.

There are many differences from mechanical to electronic.

Basically, the short block is swappable. The long block is with significant modifications.

I bought a 1999 XJ8 for $500 because the 'B'bank secondary timing chain broke.
I took a chance and replaced the chains/guides because the exhaust cam looked like it stopped in a 'good' place and the valve clearances were OK.

2 days later I drove the car out of the shop and it has been fine for the last 2 years.

Just because a chain broke does not mean the engine is destroyed.
Might be cheaper to diagnose and repair???

You can rotate the exhaust cam to check lash if the crank lock is installed. This puts all the pistons partway down the cylinders so no valves will touch any piston.
You can twirl all the cams all you want to check the clearances.

If a primary chain broke then all of this is irrelevant.

I just did this EXACT swap a few months ago- you will need at least one AJ27 head, but better using both. Flex plat is different and a few other things like the sump... If you have both engines it is not more expensive than redoing the head gaskets really.

I agree with Motorcarman- just fix the AJ27, unless you have severe damage.

I bought my XJR with a broken upper chain, no damage and have been driving it ever since.
