1997 XK8 Engine swap
Just bought an early 1997 XK8 with EGR. Has a bad engine.I have found 1997 and 1998 non EGR engines for replacement. Can you use a Non EGR engine to replace EGR engine what's involved.
Thanks,

The EGR was deleted part way through the MY97 production run, so you can use a later 97 motor, but:- you may need the ECM that went with that replacement 97 motor. I've attached a doc. that shows the changes for 98, and also a related TSB that you may find helpful.
You would run into some issues with a 98 motor (camshaft timings changed, thus ECM updated to accommodate).
Can you confirm the part # of the ECM that is in your car?

I just did this in November. My '97 coupe has VIN ending 002693, engine with EGR and I replaced the blown engine with a non ERG engine from a '97 XK8 convertible. I was only able to drive it for a couple days before I had to park it for the winter but I had no problem with the electronics and it drove great.
I believe so but I'll have to ask the mechanic when he's back tomorrow.

So, the early early module.
I think your way forward is to go with the 97 motor, and see what, if any, tidying up you have to do post-transplant.
You may get codes thrown if the ECM can't see the EGR stepper motor, but it's not insurmountable. I've attached two further TSBs that will help in that event. Note that they are interlinked and TBH not exactly crystal clear: - much depends on the car's 'service action' history.
If you can get the 97 ECM from the donor vehicle for a reasonable sum that would be useful - even if it is not immediately needed - as they are getting very difficult to source.
