1998 XK8 ABS light red and amber dash on
Hello everyone,
I am new to this forum but have acquired a 98 xk8 convertible I have been working on for a friend.
initial problem was a blown head gasket. I have rebuilt the whole top end of the motor and runs like a sowing machine. Now I have been going through everything else for my friend to ensure a safe and comfy ride.
The Problem-
I now have the ABS light, Amber light and Red light in the center of the speedo. CEL once in a while but has not came back for a couple weeks. I am using an OTC encore scan tool and pulled a P1638 (the no com on the CAN bus). I have changed the Instrument cluster and looked at the IC TSBs. I have changed the J Gate (because the cover was bad and it was super cheap at the salvage yard). I took the car to a import shop and let them scan it because my scanner was intermittently loosing communication oddly. They said they had no communication with the TCM and that all 4 wheel speed sensors were working (pertaining to the ABS light). I have done the pin out through the DLC and have read so much about this car its coming outta my ears. I have checked connecters on all the modules. I have not however checked the solder joints on the ABS module. correct me if I'm wrong in any of this but when i shot the ABS module i got the 60ohms that I should be getting. I ordered a used TCM so while I am waiting on that I figured I would hop on here and see what you guys thought. I have read a LOT on this website from others.
Does anyone have any other experience with this or ideas? Just kinda putting my feelers out, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and Thank You guys in advanced. I know there is a lot of experience floating around on this website.

I've had the amber ABS light issue since I bought my 2001 XK8. I did the re-solder of the module twice after reading about several success stories, but to no avail. I also cleaned all my speed sensors. I've learned to appreciate the pretty yellow color of the light now.

Heres the odd part and someone might have the answer but I have a $1300 OTC Encore scan tool and I am having an awful time trying to read anything. I am not sure if its because its jag or the ECU is shot. I have also thought if there is a break in the CAN bus will it cause a read failure with everything? I know there is the 60 ohm resistor in the ABS and IC. I am getting ready to check the WS sensors and pull the ABS module out this weekend and check the Solder Joints.

Don't know what's going on with the communications errors/messages but on the '02 XK8 that I just bought the red/amber light combination was on when I looked at the car before purchasing it. The brakes worked but I wasn't sure if the ABS worked. I wasn't able to get the brakes to pulse when trying to lock them up before or after it was repaired. The seller took it to a mechanic he trusted that couldn't get a definitive cause for the fault so he replaced the ABS pump (motor?). The mechanical part, not the electronics module. I don't know if a rebuilt unit was installed or if the original unit was sent out to be rebuilt. But either way it solved the ABS problems. Just an idea.
If the OTC is just looking at the K-Line then it's only going to see the ECU, Air con, fancy suspension and Key module. Oddly on the drawings I see that the K -line for those goes to Pin 15 where I would expect pin 7.
Everything else important is on the HS CAN, the IC is the gateway to the SCP network as a P1638 is a missing heartbeat from the IC you may be missing all of the SCP
For the ABS before you get too carried away, pull the big plug on it and measure the resistance through each sensor and wiggle the wires - especially at the connectors at the sensors and mid line. They can cause intermittent ABS issues.
yes if you got 60ohms KOff EO down the HS CAN lines a the ABS then you have CAN inegrity. as it is a straight network on these. Jagrepair.com has workshop and electrical manuals in case you are missing one.

I just shot The speed sensors from the ABS connector and all of them shot at1074 except 1 and it was at 1084. Do you guys think that would be enough resistance to throw the abs light? I’m going to work my way down that line to the LH rear SC.
I have an inexpensive reader which didn't see CAN. Indie's Jag ssd found defective ABS module. I've done many electrical repairs w/ solder gun. Some work, some don't.
Had a Nav screen redone in my Lexus. Local shop did the work. Full retest the next day. Has worked perfectly for 2+ years. Pro rebuild on the ABS is $400. Yes expensive but hope it's a permanent solution. Shop (def Jag experts, even have Jag spare parts cars) says defective ABS caused the rough idle. Seems ridiculous but they disconnected it. Car now idles super smooth and is drivable (short test drive). Still shows ABS/ yellow/red. New ABS should solve that warning. Is it likely that hard reset will get rid of the yellow/red?
