Default 1998 XK8 VIN appears on display at startup, is this normal?RESOLVED

I have a 1998 XK8, AJ26 Engine. I had the vehicle for about two years. Recently I noticed at start up the VIN Number Appears on the instrument display when the ignition is switched on and then goes into its nomal sequence. I don't recall seeing this previously. Is this normal?

Now that is just weird. Of all the things going on in the back ground of the electric system in these cars, FRE801, you win the prize for the "MOST UNEXPLAINED".

Obviously, you need new Engine Control and Body Control Modules! . . . and a dealer reflash of the software.

Cannot imagine how that happens. The ECM contains the VIN and it is available for retrieval with an appropriate scan tool but I have never heard of it displaying it.

RESOLVED: Apparently, when the A/B Trip is depressed on start up the last digits of the Vehicle VIN will show up on the odometer. As my A/B on Tripometer was stuck in the pressed position this was come on for 10 seconds or so when I started the car. No longer problem.

Glad you figured it out - it would be the rare case I could have provided some helpful information.

I think most forumites know about the YT channel - but in this episode, he shows the "Display VIN" secret:

Lots of other interesting stuff there as well.
Cheers!

A 2 min 33 sec video to explain something than can be done in one sentence. YouTube fanatics certainly love the sound of their own voices.
