Default 2 wire ignition coil - how to id misfire?

When I ran into this last year, I don't think we ever closed this question. Can I use my OBDII to identify a swinging ignition coil misfire? I think the next yr they went to 4 wire ignition coils - hope that's not the key.I remember reading of the ability on later years.

Anyone know for sure about the 2 wire coils? Can any obdii (consumer vs pro) report on it?

Misfire codes should be stored and readable with any tester. If you lift the coil somewhat with engine running you should be able to hear spark jumping if coil is working.

Hi John,
The P030x misfire DTCs are listed in the 98 JTIS, as are those for P035x coil malfunctions.

They're non-proprietary so readable with a generic tool, as Terrific states.

I found this on a search (and some considerably more complex texts!):

Analyzing Ignition Misfires

Coil tester is about the only way to test. Lifting as per post #2 - forget it.

You can move the suspect coil to another cylinder to see if the fault follows the coil?

Thanks Bob, I just didn't know where to start. The main reason for launching this thread was to confirm my suspicion that the 2 wire coils like I have would prevent the ecu from knowing which cylinder misfires. Good news, apparently that suspicion is false (good news).

I wonder what the 2 additional wires on the later coils does (not a question, just musing ;-)

The 2 wire's need a coil amplifier in the master cylinder false bulkhead area and the 4 wire have the 'internals' to be independent?
