2000 XK8 Gas Cap problem

Has anyone ever heard of a check engine light coming on because there is something wrong with the gas cap?
I've had my check engine light diagnosed with this fault. Replacement cap is en route, but what could actually go wrong with a gas cap?

Well the gas cap can be loosing pressure which would cause the gas tank to loose pressure. This would trigger a sensor. Its intended to tell you if you have a crack in the gas tank, but they proabably looked at that and noticed nothing wrong and said it was the gas cap. Thats my guess,

I remember learning that my 1999 XK8 had a new cap distributed by manufacturer. Just sent me one. I didn't pay attention to why that was -- maybe that's something relative to your problem?
Anyone know about that?

I had evap codes on my 2000 XK8. The cap looked ok. I had it smoke tested and found no leaks. Turns out "topping off" at the gas pump. (running more fuel to get it good and full) was the problem. Threw evap codes 2 to 3 days later. Stopped topping off. No more codes. Do you do this?
I also stopped topping off, and come to think of it I used to get evap codes and not longer do.. Huh.

Been chasing the P0455 leak code for two years. Replaced gas cap, purge valve, other valve. Found missing o-rings in left side filter cannister, loose hose at engine. Still haven't solved the problem. My mechanic hasn't charged me for anything in a while but he also hasn't found the problem. Very frustrating.
Silver2000: When you get gas; When your fuel pump Stops Pumping. Do you pull it out and put it away or put a little more gas in? Just a little top off will cause an evap code in 1 to 3 days. If you top off... stop doing that. If you don't do a smoke test they generally cost about 50-75$
