Default 2001 XK8 key

Just bought a 2001 XK8. The car seems to be in really great condition with less than 63,000 miles on it.

Unfortunately the owner lost the second key/fob. I'm seeing the fobs with the fold out key on Amazon and other places but where do you go to get that kind of key cut?

A locksmith here (western PA) was able to both cut and program an OEM blank key I bought on ebay. Don't know if he would have been able to do it on a generic aftermarket one.

For the fob, you are in luck with a 2001 car. The fobs are Ford/standard/cheap/available for that year forward. The folding "X-Type" fob works just fine. The procedure to add to the car does not require special tooling and is listed in the stickies.

For starting the engine, you will need a megamos-48 chip (check eBay). It will need to be programmed/paired with the car with JLR software. My Foxwell scanner claims to be able to do it. SDD/IDS definitely do it. Dealers and locksmiths can do this as well, but it is usually pretty expen$ive.

For the key itself, you will need a tibbe key with 8 positions. There are vendors on eBay for this. Also, check the classifieds on this forum for someone offering this service here. You can start with a simple key with a plastic handle and "hack" your way to installing the stem on the fob.

Best of luck, keep us posted.

Well the new flip open keys came today. They're supposed to be for the 2000-2006 XK8 but the part that gets the notches cut into it looks to be too short. I'm going to take it to the locksmith who said he can cut them and see what he says on Monday.

The blank key is for the later 4 bevel, 6 cut keys.

Search for an 8 cut key.

can’t see the picture too well but it doesn’t seem to be a Tibbe key blank.

That link is to AliExpress and for some reason the purchase is not going through. They want me to now supply my passport number and photo and my first born to complete the purchase. Why do I think this place is just another big scam. The Walmart.com site has the same key but it's out of stock. This is getting really silly. I'm beginning to think this purchase was a mistake. I never thought a company would make a car for which you can't simply buy a new key for. I guess I'm an old guy and can't keep up with all this new fangled technology. I get all the anti-theft protection but it just shouldn't be this difficult to get a key for a car!!

Try this member who has a listing in the marketplace section https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/market/227433

Also try searching by the part number C2N1966, genuine keys are pricey!

Hi Norri,

Thank you for the info. I'll give it a try. I've found that pretty much EVERYTHING for this car is not only expensive, but OUTRAGEOUSLY expensive. I have another post regarding the headlight washer cover, a piece of ABS plastic covered in a piece of chrome colored plastic. The sellers I was finding were listing the item at $300 plus!! And of course Jaguar was nice enough to make the part so that it simply pushes into place so that other can steal it. If I ever get one I'm going to super glue it in place!!!

I'm thinking about going around the country with a car hauler and looking for abandoned or non running cars and opening up a used parts outfit. If I charged even 50% of what I'm seeing I can make myself a wealthy man.

Thanks again for the help,
Joe

A few decades ago we got a TSB requiring proof of ownership at dealers for key replacement.

Since Jaguar North America was located in New Jersey, they enacted the policy nationwide.

UHS can get you what you need. I use them all the time and buy auction cars all the time with one key or no keys. Great customer service also.

https://www.uhs-hardware.com/pages/p...md_xj8~yr_2001

And you are correct about everything being expensive. However, that is only if you go the standard route of dealer parts or brand new parts OEM not from dealer directly, etc. owning older jaguars requires resourcefulness 100%. Paul, jaguars are pretty outside of the box so you need to think outside of the box. Used parts, good aftermarket (which isn't always available), etc. There is a certain level of jag tax. Heck, as a prime example, I bought one 2011 XJ SC from the auction then realized that a single part I needed, the rear bumper cover, would have cost me basically the same amount as a whole entire other 2012 XJ SC, so I just bought a whole another parts car basically. While I understand this is not feasible for many, I was just using it as an example of working outside the box. I have a tibbe for my X-Type That I got from UHS and it works fantastic.

Take a look at SNG Barratt they have a genuine part for $234.87 and aftermarket for $21.53 https://www.sngbarratt.com/English/#...f-21b588eaa979 you may need to put in some legwork
to find the best deals.

According to Barratt’s website the stand alone key is no longer available. The remote is “special order”.

I think I’ve found the blank on here, https://www.carandtruckremotes.com/p...97d0643e&_ss=c. I guess I’ll just have to find another remote since it doesn’t appear that any of the flip out style units will work with a 2001 car. Looks like it has to do with the electronics in the remote being different in the earlier cars. I was thinking about getting a flip out remote and removing the key and replacing it with an 8 cut key but from what I’m seeing those remotes will not sync up with this car.

I thought 2001 onwards could be used with flip fob. Did you contact @Sone for a key?

Wonder of Wonders, the lady I bought the car from actually found the second key, fob and the valet key. I got them in the mail yesterday and the work. Problem solved.
