2001 XKR cooling fan stays on
We have a 2001 XKR Convert with 43 thousand miles. Recently the cooling fan comes on after any normal driving and stays on for quite some time. The temp has generally stayed the same until driving up a hill, Santa Cruz, Ca mountains when it ran almost into the hot zone. The service dept replaced the water pump and flushed the cooling system. But the fan still stays on after the engine is shut down. Service says it may be a clogged radiator but says their test shows it is fine. The fans still stays on and is not as it was. Any suggestions?

The cooling fans will stay on for a certain amount of time even after the car is shutoff if it's hot enough. All my Jags. have opperated this way. This is normal however if they come on early and stay on too long then thats a problem. My STR was doing it in the middle of winter and it turned out to be the thermostat. Thermostat and water pump were replaced and no more problems. Hope this helps.

Thanks, but what is different is that this fan never did this before except when it was run a little hot or on long driving runs. Something is different. I had thought it might be a thermostat sticking but the service rep says no. There must be some tell-tale sign here. I need to do some more testing though.

RE: 2001 XKR cooling fan stays on
Muchas gracias for all these responses. Interesting thing is that when the service rep delivered our XKR yesterday, it sat in the parking lot for 3 hours and when I went out to start it, the battery, original, was dead and a jump did not work so our service rep brought out a new battery and it of course worked. My thought was that since the fan has been coming on every time we drive the car that perhaps it wore the battery out. Just a thought for others. Any way we will change the T-stat before we do anything else. With only 43 thousand miles, it does not seem as though it should be a radiator as the service agent says it could be. He said he tested the T-stat but the way the temp changes up an down gives some reason to suspect the T-stat. And it did get into the red zone last evening for only a few seconds. Thanks again for all you highly appreciated responses.

Normally if the raditor is blocked, the pressure will suck in one of the radiator hoses, looks flat instead of round. The pressure cap on expansion tank can make it look like the same thing too. Your problem almost certainly sounds like thermostat. On hottest day fan should not run for more than 2 minutes after shut off. Normally 30 seconds will be max.

My temp. jumped around and the fans ran before I had the thermostat replaced. Now all is good. Mine was stuck closed so the faster I went the hotter it got. Only turning on the heat would bring it back down which is also another thing you could try when it over heats just to see if it helps.
