Default 2002 XK8 Gearbox Fault

Hi Everyone. Reading this Forum has helped me several times. Thanks to all the experts on here!!

My 2002 XK8 just painted and the Body looking "NICE". Three days later 2nd gear started slipping. Does not do it when car has cooled off for a while. But after about 10 miles it starts slipping and Gearbox Fault appears. Tried disconnecting battery for 45 minutes. Tried adding 1/2 quart fluid through the Cooling hose (Tip I read here). Problem still exists. Taking to mechanic tomorrow. Mechanic says if its a solenoid issue it will be a "few Hundred" if its a rebuild around $3000. Can someone tell me how he will be able tell which it is? If its a rebuild I will sadly have to part with it. And I LOVE driving it.....
Mileage 78523.

Second gear slipping is not the usual 5HP24 failure symptom. The most common is 1st gear failure caused by a known weakness in the valve body. Perhaps your problem is located there also but the only way to determine that is to replace the valve body. Rebuilt units are easily available because of that known problem. Between a new unit and fresh ATF there is a better than even chance that that will fix the issue but whatever will be will be.

Welcome to the forum and good luck!

Thanks for the information. Any Idea how much (Ball Park figure) it is to replace the VALVE BODY with a rebuilt one?

Check your ATF level first, valve body will be $300-$500 rebuilt +fluid/filter/labor.

Thanks for the response. If anyone has any links to rebuilt Valve Bodies for a 5HP24 transmission I would be thankful. Found a lot for ZF 's but not many for mine. I see you have to match codes and Solenoid Colors?? Anyway to tell without actually pulling the Valve Body out? Sorry my expertise is Computers not Transmissions..

If you have a 2000 XK8 you have a ZF 5HP24 transmission. Lots of 5HP24's out there in Jaguars, BMW's and others. Should not be a big deal finding one but mine works fine so I haven't gone looking.
