Default 2002 XKR Radiator Removal

JTIS manual says remove Supercharger Pump, Discharge AC, Remove Convertible Cross Bracket/Braces (front X in front of condensor), etc. Any steps that can be skipped? Or can I follow the XK8 instructions? (Have not found XKR instructions) Also any site that has Radiator for XKR under 700 dollars?? Jag sites well over 1000 dollars for new one...ugh...Thank you...(Posted to wrong site earlier..sorry)

Can't speak to the XKR, but I replaced the radiator in my XK8 without doing all the steps.

I did not remove the convertible bracing. I did not need to discharge the AC lines, just be careful not to bend them enough to crimp the line.

The radiator I needed ended up being the one listed for the XKR and I paid ~$600 from RockAuto 6 months ago. However, the radiators are exactly the same for the XK8 vs XKR. The difference is the connectors for the oil cooling lines. The radiators at the time I bought were $300 and $600 respectively. Mighty expensive fittings.

There is a thread on the forum where one member went to a plumbing supply and bought brass step-down fittings for ~$30 and used the lower priced radiator. Based on my experience, there is no reason that would not work.

Thanx...do u know which part number for the Radiator? Because RockAuto does not list one for my XKR. But 3 for the XK8. Also having a hard time getting to the plugs for the fans and the screws for the condenser...behind metal and socket won't fit..even with swivel..argh. Any suggestions...thanx in advance.

As you probably saw from the posted thread, the correct radiator number changes from both model and year. Easiest way to get the correct part number is to call a Jag dealer and ask. Make sure you're sitting down in case they give you a price too.

Once you remove the air box, the attachment for the condenser should be simple to get to. I just looked at mine and the nut that holds it to the fender could probably be reached with a medium extension even with the air box in place. Keep in mind, you just need to swivel it out of the way.

Best way to disconnect the two electrical connectors is from beneath the car. Hard to reach from the top. You have to get under there anyway to drain it, so...

The evaporator canister is easy to get to once the air box is removed...done that. The problem is the condensor(attached to the radiator thru the body from the front). A 8mm socket won't reach it, needs a long 8mm wrench. I'm presuming the evaporator canister will move once i get the condensor detached from the radiator(since i have loosen it from the body). Also problem finding the release on the electric fan motor plug, I pull the tab up and try to pull out the plug...won't budge...sugestions?? Is there another release tab besides the one?

OK, one more link: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...ndenser-73626/

Full disclosure, the first time I pulled the radiator, I took off one of the AC lines by mistake. However, the 2nd time I left it in place and used the general technique discussed in post #2 of the link.

Ok..after a lot of work. I got the radiator out. Reminder to those attempting this. Electric plugs to fan motor have rubber grommets and take a little force to remove. After removing condenser to radiator bolts, REMOVE the cross brace...it only takes a couple of minutes and will make life a lot easier. After removing the Star Bolts for the Wind Plate...takes some wiggling but NO bending of the AC lines are needed. It will eventually slide up but you MUST get the Wind Plate out of the way...or the condenser will not rise off the radiator. Now getting the radiator to condenser bolts back on...I have no idea. Any suggestions appreciated as a finger will not get back there???

I had the hood off when I put mine back together, I don't remember exactly how I did it, I think if you leave everything loose you can get to it by hand. I had the A/C canister on the right side loose in its bracket also. The cross brace may not have been in place either, after you get the condenser in place try leaning top of radiator in towards engine. Damn I wish I could remember for sure, but I don't remember it as all that bad. Good luck.

There's a very good reason we ask members to add vehicle details to their forum Signatures.

Telling everyone you have an XKR 2001 will help them give accurate advice.
