Default 2003 Jag tensioner questions

I have a 2001 XK8 with a bad engine due to chain failure. I have located a 2003 engine. Have all the chain/tensioner problems been addressed with the 2003 engine? The engine is more expensive to buy but would be cheaper in the long run, if I do not have to replace the timing chains and tensioners. I have been told a 2003 engine will fit a 2001. Thanks

The '03 engines, as did the late '02s all had the metal tensioners. The '03 4.2L engines can be swapped but involve a lot of issues that will substantially increase labor cost. Here is some discussion on the subject:

Default 4.0 2003 engine

I thought the 2003 engine was a 4.0. Did they change midyear?

The '03 XK8 was a 4.2L. I believe that the '03 XJ8 was a 4.0L.

Then there is the difference between the US and ROW model years.

Default 2003 4.0 a27

Sorry I forgot to mention the engine was from a 2003 XJ8 sedan. The salvage yard wants $2000 for the engine. I thought with no chain/tensioner expense that might be the way to go vs a 2001 engine that I would have to replace the chains/tensioners.

Default Throttle body

The 2003 XJ8 4.0 engine I am looking at is missing the throttle body. Would the throttle body from my 2001 engine work on the 2003 engine?

All AJ27 Normally Aspirated 4.0 engines will bolt into your 2001 XK8.

The throttles are the same.

Really the only difference in the 2003 XJ8 is the primary silent chain and oil pump setup.
All the ancillary parts will bolt on and plug up.
I can't think of any real differences.

01 xk8 I just had an issue with my engine, is this year and model know for having tensioner and timing belt issues? Is it repairable or do I need a new engine?

The 2001 MY does have the plastic tensioners and they should be replaced. Timing belts are no better or worse than any car, but are easily replaced.

As to your engine issue, it depends. What kind of issue do you have? Your description is a little too vague to offer any suggestions and why do you think this issue is tied to the tensioners?
