Default 2003 XK8 - Check Rear Lights / Cruise Not Available

I have a 2003 XK8 4.2 with 43k miles. After I have been driving for a short time I get a warning message 'Check Rear Lights' which flashes intermittently with another message 'Cruise Not Available'.

Any ideas on what might be causing this would be most gratefully welcome!

Many thanks!

Your brake pedal switch is in the process of giving up the ghost. My wife's XK8's brake pedal switch exhibited the same dashboard messages just two weeks ago. A new brake pedal switch fixed it. Mind you, it is a bear to change and usually requires two people. Removing the drivers seat before you begin the switch removal and replacement process is well worth your time for the amount of additional working room it provides you with....

Search the forum using "brake pedal switch failure" as your key words and you'll find several threads with plenty of advice on how to go about replacing it....

It is a dealer-only item. I paid $125 plus tax two weeks ago at our local dealership parts department. That was a discounted price that I asked for and received - their original quote was $149....

for some reason I think I remember having read somewhere that using rear brake lights of the incorrect resistance might also cause that, but I could be mistaken.

Hi there. I wanted to let you know that I replaced the switch today (with the help of my horizontal 14 years old, Josh!) and all is working again. Many thanks for your help on this.

Congrats! I sure wish that 14-year-old Josh had been at our house three Sundays ago when my wife and I did her brake pedal switch replacement job. Josh probably would have cut the time required in half or better, and his presence would definitely have forced me to clean up my vocabulary throughout the process....

I'm curious.. I had this same issue, and before replacing the switch, I was able to adjust it and it seems to be fine. How do you know when one is faulty exactly?

The short answer is when adjusting doesn't fix it!! That's not meant to sound as patronising as it does! Sorry!
