Default 97 xk8 bad oil pump?

I just rebuilt my transmission and drove the car 4 times, started the car after I had been to dinner and noticed a little knocking sound so I looked at the oil pressure gauge and it was in the red for about 2 seconds then went to normal. Check my oil I had plenty. I drove the car home about 2 miles with good oil pressure, noticed the knock still. I went out to my car the next morning and started it, no pressure and a knocking that sounds pretty bad. I turned the car right back off, I took off the oil cap and looked and the cam and valves were dry. Could that knock be the oil pump? sounds like it's coming from the front lower part of the motor, or is it too late and there's internal damage? I was looking online for engine rebuild kits just in case and haven't been successfull. If I have to get a new motor I'm selling the car as is.

that doesn't sound good, might be time to two it into a shop before starting it up again. I'm not sure how to diagnose a no-oil pressure scenario w/o possibly doing harm to the engine. Does the oil pump have its own fuse/relay?

Haven't heard of many oil pumps going bad at all..no matter what the age on these XK8/Rs.

I'm going to take my oil pump off and see if I can notice anything wrong with it. I found one for 225$ I could put on there if need be. I did add Lucas oil stabilizer to the oil 2 days before my problem...that shouldn't e a problem right? As far as rebuild kits has anyone found one for a reasonable price? I'm not interested in doing a new motor for 7k on this car.

I would pull the lower sump pan and check the plastic pick-up tube before pulling the front off the engine to get to the pump.

Sometimes the pick-up screen gets clogged with debris.

In addition to Bob's idea of looking in the sump (good idea since in the process of doing the tranny, the car may have been jacked on the sump, collapsing it against the pickup and blocking it), I suggest replacing the oil filter with a different brand and adding back the lost quart. I doubt the Lucas oil stuff caused the problem but as a general rule, I never use any oil additives. The oil comes with everything it needs, adding stuff can only cause problems, seldom does it make things better.
