Smile 97 XK8 Convertible top stopped while raising, just shy of latching.

Guys, I want to thank you for any advice that you may have to offer as it will save me many hours with the DVOM if I could get a little steer towards the known problem areas or cures.

The facts: 97 XK8.
  • My wife dropped the top then went to raise it.
  • When near the latching position the top stopped while holding the button.
  • She released the button then pressed again.
  • Afterwards the top latched, the I.P. cluster hood open indicator came on and the back windows would not close.
  • 40 amp fuse is good for the pump as is both 20A window lift fuses
  • I used the allen key to verify that the lid was actually fully latched
  • The up/down switch makes contact as it should
  • I have a copy of the JTIS but not the diagnostic-troubleshooting routine
  • I'm new to the sight, can anyone steer me toward any known quik checks?

The resident top expert, GUS, will be along shortly to help but the top hydraulics are a never ending source of entertainment.

Perhaps you could get a head start by reading his web site links:

Default Updated top problem

I removed the relays then jumped both motors (thank goodness for the universal relay) to raise both rear windows up and down then did the same for the pump to verify proper operation (with the latch manually open) After reconnecting all components, my hood open warning disappeared. Next, lowered both rear windows using the down switch. Then, I attempted to raise the rear windows and they wouldn't go up. Jumped windows to raise again. My windows are up, top is sealed, I'll revisit the up/down switch tomorrow.

The windows will not close until the roof latch is satisfied and the rams for the roof are extended completely. Read my instructions http://www.gusglikas.com/AutoRepairH...lOperation.htm but what you need to do is latch the roof at the header manually and push the close button, what should take place is that your rams will extend and the windows will close.

Default Thanks to Gus! Once again, life is good in Jagland.

Gus, your advice worked like a charm and saved me a lot of unecessary diagnostic time. I truly appreciate your help and would like to say "Thank You" once again.

I am new to the forum. My first impression of the group is totally positive!
