A friends 97 XK8 top goes up and down but it is very slow. Anything we can check? Thanks

 

Fluid in the Pump behind the right side panel, over the CD remote. Should be at the top line.

In addition to fluid level you might want to check what type fluid you have in it. Do a search for the fluid changes. There is an older type fluid that gels up and slows down the movement. Also while you are checking the fluid level there is a small petcock on the pump. It is a bypass valve for manual operation. If it vibrates loose it will allow a portion of the fluid and pressure to return to the tank slowing down the operation. Look for a T shaped rod and make sure it is tightly closed.
If you do find the tank low on fluid you should check for leaks in the 2 lifting rams and hoses.

 

Should take no more than 20 seconds, unless they installed the voltage reducer to help de-stress the hose pressure. Add 5 to 7 se onds if they did.
