Default 99 XK8 - Gas Smell

This was the first good spring day to take a long top down drive and we both smelled gas as we were driving. (I did just fill up tank last week). Is there any known reason for the car to be smelling like gas more than usual? I checked the vent tube opening in filler door and it was clear. Only 36,000 miles and all issues (so far) have been repaired or replaced.

Any ideas?

If the smell lessened after the car warmed up I would look at the fuel pressure regulator. Located on R side of engine on the fuel rail.

We drove around for a good 45 minutes to an hour and it still smelled when we got home. I do not see any obvious signs of leaking anywhere.

I guess something else then. FWIW, the fuel pressure regulator will quit leaking after a few minutes and the exhaust will burn off most liquid...a little will remain next to the injectors but you can't see it unless you raise something (don't remember) out of the way. I'd put my nose near the right side of the engine when it cools down and be certain that isn't the issue.
good luck.

I have a similar issue on my 1998, faint fuel smell outside of the car when standing near the rear or in the trunk. It just started, I need to poke around and look for leaks.

I drove the car probably 70 miles yesterday and when I returned the garage smelled of something. My wife says gasoline but I tend to think it is not pure gas I am smelling. A "chemical smell" of some kind. This morning I took everything out of trunk and check fuel lines and drainage. The truck area is completely dry. The hydraulic hoses and pump are dry and full. I then raised the hood and other than the tiniest leak on the VFT o-ring, everything is dry. I checked coolant, it is full.

Other ideas???

Sorry, what is vft?
If it is the fuel pressure regualator or pulse dampener then when you first start the car in morning (cold engine), check that same area for leakage (with engine running).

Sorry, too lazy to look it up this morning and made up VFT. (Variable Valve Timing Solenoid Seals - AJ82856 )
Wasn't close and it doesn't matter. There was just a little seepage around o-ring. That can't be the issue. It is probably some of the vapor canisters not working properly.

there is a small vent hose, about 3 in. long that in time will crack and allow fumes into cabin.

three on the evap flange in the trunk depending and year one on the bottom of the fill neck going to the charcoal canisters.

the big guy is a stepped hose you can jam a smaller hose into a big heater hose and good to go no evap codes

Hose is on top of tank where pump goes in. connects to metal pipe going down side of tank. It is two different dia. on both ends and is pricey from Jag.
