Default Advise on 2002 xkr coupe purchase

I have been looking at various xk8/r for a couple of months. I am getting serious about an 2002 xkr coupe- 62,000, silver ex, black int. It has the 5 spoke 20" wheels. It is gorgeous. The door sticker puts manufacture at 9/01 which is one month after the 8/ 01 change for the tensioners. Is this absolutely true? Is there a way to check or know for sure without opening the engine? The only two things that I don't like is the ugly NAV and I would prefer a lighter color interior. It has new tires and again is just stunning to look at. What is the right price for this car? Thanks. Hope to join the club soon.

Welcome to the forum, it would be a good idea to post an intro in the new members section.

You should read these two threads https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...-advice-24282/ & https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...001-xk8-10043/

8/01 was the engine build date for the upgraded tensioners not the vehicle build date, only sure way to know is to look.

lightstrum,
Three years ago I purchased a 2002 XKR with 62,000 miles on it in nearly mint condition with a full Jaguar dealer service history, and I'll be passing 118,000 miles this week. It had a build date of 07/01, and I replaced the tensioners about 5000 miles ago, I was very lucky. I have had the vast majority of the most common maladies that have been reported on this forum, tensioners, transmission, "green shower" (obviously doesn't affect the coupe), supercharger rebuild, rear wheel bearing, abs module rebuild...so, it hasn't been effortless driving. However, I've owned a lot of cars over my 44 years of driving, and I've probably never enjoyed one as much, both driving it and looking at it. And on a daily basis I receive compliments on its timeless beauty (most people think it is a much newer model). I also prefer the subtle differences in the front grill and the side rockers of these earlier XKRs to the later ones like the 2005-2006 models. If the price is right, and the history is known, and you can do some or all of the work on the car, don't be afraid. I would still take the time to check the tensioners just to make sure. Good luck with your decision.

Follow Norri's good advice to find buying information available on the forum.

If the black interior and the SatNav isn't to your taste, changes will add significantly to the purchase price. Keep on searching for the right spec unless the seller is prepared to negotiate.

I don't think you'll find an XKR without nav, I believe it might have even been standard (correct me if I'm wrong).

As far as the tensioners go, its not that difficult to do yourself if you're handy, or have a shop do it for your. You can always use that as a bargaining chip in negotiations.

I suggest looking at KBB for a suggested value of a jag given a specific trim, etc.

I think an xkr coupe (especially in silver) is the way to go, and i'm extremely happy with mine. Good luck!

I agree that the satnav is ugly (and also prehistoric). I changed mine for the more classy looking three-gauge setup using the guidelines I found on here.

Or you can re-purpose the nav screen for something a little more useful/modern.

+1 on a coupe, but then again, I'm biased.

For U.S. XKRs, Nav was optional in 2000 Only, Standard on 2001 up.

My car does NOT have Nav.

May be different for Canada and Europe.

Default Drive several of them

You must drive several of these cars. Some have nicely tight suspensions and others are floppy. Fixing the floppiness isn't simple. Mine was floppy but isn't now, but LOTS of parts were replaced. Everything else is well known and fixable for these cars.

I passed over an XKR convertible with 35,000 fewer miles due to its dark interior and my desire for a coupe with a light interior. Financially that car would have overall been a better deal, BUT a light interior shows off the wood much better. AND the back seat in a coupe is actually usable. Second day I had mine in town after a two-day road trip to retrieve it, I had two gals in mine on way to party. the one in back did not complain for the simple 10 minute trip. Since repeated 20 times.

My rich clients at first assumed I was borrowing the XKR from another rich client. Several had fond memories when they owned one.

Also, want more growl? Easy. Have mechanic remove 4 of the 5 mufflers and use straight pipes. No envy for all the US muscle car sounds. Ferrari mid-engine models still way more noisy so not a red-neck, low-class issue.

Yep, 2000 XKR sans-nav here. 3-gauge is the timeless way to go. Doing RealGauge soon!

When I was looking I really wanted those 20 inch wheels. You may want to see what the replacement cost is just in case. I don't remember, but it was a whole lotta money for just one.

Default Thanks for all the replies

Hi guys thanks for all the replies, they really set me straight about what I wanted and now I have it- 2004 xkr midnight coupe, just turned 31,000 three days and many fun miles after I bought it.
I want to especially point out how important it is to drive the car and make sure it tracks right. The silver 2002 that I mentioned when I first drove it was really wobbily and it put me off. The seller then had it re tired and balanced and I drove it again it. It was much better, but not right. I didn't go for it. I then drove a couple more coupes and converts and was amazed at how different each car felt.
Also, since I wanted a coupe, I just couldn't live with a black interior- too claustrophobic, so I passed on two more that were pretty good. I did grow to like the silver color, but couldn't find one with a light interior.
And, as I read more and more it became apparent the value of a low milage vehicle, so that became an important criterion. I am not handy with a wrench and didn't want to start out needing a lot of fixes.
So, there I was 5.30 am perusing the usual sources when up popped the midnight coupe, It just said buy me. It was 80 miles from its new home. by 10am I was driving it- tracked straight, felt tight and was just fricken awesome.
It was apparent to me that there are not a lot of these in this condition and this was as good as I was going to get. I may have paid a premium, but I found my ride.
Thanks to all.
