Air Bag - Code 17
I now have a part number for the B Pillar occupancy sensor, as I had a chat with Andy at Autoreserve Jaguar Parts in Derbyshire, although they don't currently have one in stock.
The part number is: HJE9681GBNED, with the NED being the colour code of the outer grill facia.
Any colour would do me, as I would be swapping the internals over anyway.
In the meantime, if anyone does have a testing procedure for the B Pillar sensor 'in situ', that would be great, and allow me to confirm if it is that part which has actually failed.

Thank you very much for this useful thread. I have code 17 fault but in a S-Type 4.2 of the same vintage, there is scant information about it on any S-Type forum I frequent though. I am hoping the cars have a similar arrangement in the SRS system setup.
I followed the steps for testing the ACM and the results were that the warning light illuminated when I lifted my weight from the seat, but not when I moved close to the dashboard, or when I covered any of the three sensors.
How can I test that the three sensors are working before I go about trying to replace the module?
Thanks again!

I can't really help much unfortunately, as I only had a problem with the 'B pillar' sensor.
As I had no ideas on how to test it, I removed the rear quarter internal panel, which contained the 'B pillar' sensor to have a look and found that the electrical connector to the sensor wasn't plugged in properly.
Once I had pulled the connector out and re-connected it, the airbag light went out and thankfully hasn't played up again.
Sorry I'm unable to help, but I hope you're able to sort it .......

From what I can remember, the working occupancy sensors give out a high frequency when powered and working. Maybe you could use your phone to record any frequency produced and view it as an oscilloscope sound recording.
Just a thought, to see if you can identify a sensor fault, before delving deep into the bowels of the Jag, looking for the control module.
Good luck
Charlie,
I haven't had the opportunity to investigate what that section of the circuit does yet but I'll be tracing it this week.
As you say, two identical failures is suspicious and putting an issue like this into the dealer would result in a very large bill.
The module from any other 2003 onwards XK8/XKR appears to be plug and play with no reprogramming involved because they were all programmed the same at the factory during the vehicle build. However, this isn't the case with a new one from Jaguar - it has to be programmed.

02 model will also have to be reprogrammed if the fault turns out to be the module too?
