Air Conditioner Charge Valve Replacement
Hi All,
Refrigerant has been leaking from my 1999 XKR through the charge valve that's on top of the receiver dryer, the one with the plastic ball in it.
I've got a replacement one (MHD7372AA) from Jaguar, but my mechanic says he doesn't have the special tool to replace it.
Does this make sense? Thought a simple open wrench will do. Anyone has the replacement procedure handy?
Many thanks,
Nitch

I use a pair of adjustable jaw pliers and remove the old one. (damaged perimeter is OK because it is trash anyway)
You might want to wrap tape around the new one for installation and don't squeeze too tightly.
It seals on an O ring so TIGHT is not really necessary.(SNUG is good)

A tool is available if you plan to replace them often or just like to have every tool you can own?(I am kind of a tool *****)

Um, the drier isn't that expensive. $13-$25 from RockAuto. Since you are opening the system, a new drier is in order anyway. I just replaced the drier, condenser, and compressor a few months ago. Wasn't that expensive. A/C is blowing cold, and I know that it's good for a few years now.
Interesting fact time: The A/C connections are allowed to leak up to 1/2 oz of refrigerant per year by design. Some could be worse if not tight, I guess. Normal system has 8 connections, but I think the X100 has 10. So, those that say "It's a closed system. It should never need to be recharged." are wrong. If that loss of refrigerant isn't detected, low refrigerant can damage the compressor. Act accordingly.

Guess what. Jaguar doesn't have a corner on these parts. They didn't create new parts just for these cars. 20 year old car? Sure, use a quality non-Jaguar part, and save yourself 80%. Here in the colonies, RockAuto sells quality parts, and even the best one was like $25.
Indeed - in the same way that the alternator I recently fitted came in a Denso box rather than a Jaguar one @ 10x the price.
It was more a gripe about Heritage's rapidly escalating prices. I have used RockAuto a few times: shocks, A/C compressor and steering parts were a better deal even with transatlantic shipping...
