Default Which alternator is the correct one?

Looking online for a new/reman alternator for a 1999 XK8. Vin 039493
SNG Barratt parts catalog lists;
to VIN A30645 # LNC1800AA
After VIN A30646 # C2C19630
Online model compatibility checks seems to be all over the place.
So are the pre 4.2 litre all the same?
Going by the part catalog, there is a change for mine. Does the "A " in the vin mean anything?

LNC1800AA is the one you want, and is also listed on Jaguar Heritage parts as correct.

Jaguar changed the VIN sequence in 1999 - it jumped from 042775 to A0016, so the 'A' is significant. This doc. shows what I mean:

Mark, I found out the hard way that there is advantage to buying a Denso [OEM] brand alternator. I returned 2 or 3 generic autozone units before my local jag mechanic was kind enough to see me the Denso for the same price as the generics.

Mark, its hard to remember. Probably low volt output.

ah, its the kind of thing I push out of my mind. But I got much faster at installing the last one!

I always take the old one to my local 'starter/alternator' rebuilder for repair. I get back a correct part that works. They know which DENSO regulator to use. I think it is the same as some kinda Toyota.
Many of the generic rebuilts work but the battery light stays ON.

The rebuilders use the wrong regulator. The alt charges but the light in the INST PK stays lit.

That is my experience.

I had my wife's 2006 XK8's alternator refurbished back in July. The shop used the proper Denso components, which took several days to obtain. My total cost for the refurbishment job was $128 and I was glad to be able to install the factory alternator back into her vehicle since I knew there would be no compatibility issues....

I am getting one from a well known Jag Daimler parts place in Australia.
Hopefully they know what they are doing.
