Default Amber CEL getting codes, please help

My wife came home today with an Amber check engine light. I followed advise from this forum and went to O'Reilly's Auto Parts for a code read. The codes read as engine misfires. Any idea what this could be? I do not drive the car. But, it seemed to be running fine to me.

Thanks in advance.

Common causes are water or oil in the spark plug wells, bad coil(s), or bad plugs.

You need to post your model and model-year and the actual code numbers if you want more help for two reasons:

1. Some 'generic' codes have different meaning on a Jaguar. Meaning can also vary by model year.

2. If it truly is a misfire to identify which cylinder(s)

Jamie,
I've started a new thread for our post - you'll get better results.
As Steve says ALWAYS post the actual codes.

Default Amber engine light

My wife's car is a 2002 XK8. And, I do not have the specific codes as I was at the O'Reilly's Auto Parts store, as a read on this forum, and was being told about the misfiring code from the gentleman running the code reader.

Is this something that the Jaguar dealer would best suited to diagnose or would one of the independent Jaguar service centers be able to make the repair? I am leaning toward more experience as I do not want to bare the cost of replacing parts until the codes disappear.

Thank you again for your helpful information. I am looking to have the car repaired tomorrow as my wife will be returning to town on Friday and I would like for her to have her baby ready to go.

Jamie,

It doesn't necessarily have a fault. The misfire code could have been set due to an out-of-range signal rather than a failed component

You do need the actual code(s) as this will identify which cylinder(s) set the code.

In terms of cost, the Jaguar Dealer can certainly diagnose and fix the CEL but this is the most expensive option. An independent will also be able to make any necessary diagnosis and repairs at lower cost.

Having the codes read and posting them here could save you a lot of $$.

It would be much less expensive to buy a code reader and post the codes here, rather than go to a dealer or indy for diagnostics. If you are going to own the Jag for a while you will find that even an inexpensive code reader is a must.

Thanks for the advise. Any recommendations on code readers? My wife loves this car and my 8 year old is already eyeing it as his future car.

Thanks again,
Jamie

Jamie,

Plenty to choose from. Check this link for member recommended:

Note and avoid the few reported as having connection or inaccurate reading issues.

Default Amber CEL

I picked up the Innova 3100 code reader today. The code reader gave the following codes:

P0300
P0301
P0304
P1000

My neighbor was running the code reader and then he reset the amber CEL. We drove the car for about ten miles and the CEL did not come back on. The car seemed to run fine.

Please advise.

Thanks,
Jamie

Check the codes again. It is possible to have codes without the light getting triggered.

If the same codes have returned, remove the six bolts on the coil cover on the right (US passenger side) of the engine. Then remove the frontmost and rearmost coil and inspect the spark plug well for fluids. Water means a leaky coil cover, oil means leaky seals under the valve cover.

If they are dry, then remove and inspect those 2 spark plugs. If everthing is still OK, then chances are replacing those 2 coils will solve the problem.

Note these positions only apply to 2002 and earlier vehicles.

Default OBD reader

I picked up the Innova 3100 code reader at O'Reilly's for $145 out the door. It's proved to be a great investment. Last week I had my transmission flushed, and immediately got a amber check engine light, plugged in the 3100, and it gave me the code for a sensor circuit failure (P10710) and I cleared it 3 times, and it went away. The 3100 lets you clear the codes so you can see if it's a real problem or not. I wouldn't be without it now.
