Default Another issue on top shock mount rebuilds

Did you rebuild your top shock mount and found the spring had a large curve in it.
A slight curve is normal, but I just had an unusual one in one mount and for the life of me, could not get it out.
That wasn't the only thing going on, the mount would not get into a 90 degree with the shock stem.
After a bunch of disassembles, I just had to give it more thought, as changing things had no real effect.
I did notice when releasing the spring and just having the shock stem nut on but few turns, I could get close to a 90 degree but when tightening down the top of the mount would go to one side. I was thinking the spring was moving it, that was a little bit true but not the issue.
So I released the spring again and grabbed the top mount and it wobbled enough to make me investigate further. I removed it and as the shock was new the flat spot on the stem that the washer sits on was OK, but looking into the mount itself, it was not smooth in the area where it should mate with the flat spot. I took the mount apart and placed the washer on it and confirmed it was not a positive mating surface but worn badly.
I replaced with a washer from a used one from a old casing that was not reusable. Problem solved and got a normal slight curve. The bad washer was allowing the strength of the spring to push the top cockeyed, for lack of a better word.
Now, what does the average Joe do , that doesn't have a extra one laying around?
Working on it. I think a round grinding stone, for a Dremmel the same size as the shelf, using a drill press to judge a few thousands grind might do it, just enough to get the flat back.
It's very thin, so shouldn't take much and most of us don't have a lathe to do it.
I'm in the process of finding the right size, can always make a larger one the right size.
I do know that is something I will check in the future for any mounts I send out, kind of getting routine for me to check the size of the hole, they are famous for not being correct and not letting the mount even get to the shelf. That really causes a lot of banging.

Well done Wayne....

Been fighting with the 20-year-old American Standard Champion 4 master bathroom toilet the last couple of days. Installed a new fill valve tower assembly yesterday, and a new flush valve seal kit first thing this morning. Happened to have both of these kits on hand in my box of assorted toilet repair parts I have accumulated over the years. The system seems to be operating normally now. Our community well water has always been tough on the various parts that live in the tank. Man, how I hate plumbing....
