Default Any seat experts?

Bought my xkr with the drivers seat not reclining, the head rest dont work either
the recline switch makes no clicking noise from the relay nothing at all
seat head rest just makes a horrible grinding noise
I have swapped seat control units, both dont recline though
anyone know what wires operate it? bottom plug from the control unit goes into the back of the seat
is this a common problem? is it a bad relay in the control box?
just need the seat more upright tbh, can hot wire it into position is fine, its only me driving it (well if I ever get the never ending list todo list done), seat is out so can get easy access

A non-operative head rest is a common problem. There is a low cost fix for that. Just do a search on the forum for “head rest repair”.

I don’t know about the reclining issue, someone else more knowledgeable will likely respond.

Hi sl55,

You can download the wiring diagrams for your car at the link below. See pdf page 56:

Jaguar X100 Electrical Guide 1999

Since you have the seat out, you can easily test the recline motor by applying 12 volts across the Purple wire with Slate tracer stripe and the Purple wire with Orange tracer stripe. Reversing the polarity of the voltage will change the direction of rotation of the motor. You can also check for control voltage from the module on those same wires when the recline switch is activated.

I am attaching the Technical Service Bulletin about the very common headrest issue. The problem is that the headrest drive cable was manufactured incorrectly, and over time the upper end of the metal core slips out of the headrest drive mechanism. Jaguar's fix is to remove 12mm from the cable sheath so the core extends further at the top end. Heat-shrink tubing is then used to re-secure the two sections of sheath.

While you have the seat back leather rolled up to modify the headrest cable, disconnect and clean the airback connector that is about halfway up the seat back (my recollection is that it is yellow). This connector tends to corrode or loosen over time, triggering an intermittent airbag warning lamp. I flush the pins in both halves of the connector with CRC Electronic Cleaner, allow to dry or dry with compressed air, then reconnect and confirm the two halves are securely latched.

Cheers,

Don

The common problem with the seat control modules is that the circuit board is installed on hard plastic ledges all the way around. With road vibrations and what not, the board tracks located on the edge basically wear out and stop performing their duty, leading to failed seat operations. Failed seat heater is common, along with mechanical functions like recline. Most folks repair these modules by using the usual hack of replacing failed tracks with individual shunt wires, soldered at the beginning and end of said failed track. This is driven by visually following the track from its broken spot. This avoids the high cost of a new module (if even available from Jaguar) and subsequent "programming" to pair a new module to the car.

If you are uncomfortable doing the repair yourself, there are individual on this list that offer the service for a fee. General control module companies can do this type of work too I assume.

FWIW, Jaguar is/used to offer replacement lids for these modules at a very low cost. Worth looking into instead of letting a broken up lid clank around under your seat.

Best of luck, keep us posted.
