Anyone able to fix Security Locking Module
Hello all, I had no fobs with my XK8 Final Edition 4.2S which I got at auction in early 2020 and have just resorted to using the keys. The servicing paperwork that came with the car showed that a Jaguar Main Dealer had tried to diagnose the fault back back in 2017 and gave up because the fault was tracked to the SLM and parts weren't available to fix it. (I know typical main dealer). Like me the previous owner I have just lived with it up until now . Having decided to try and improve the old girl I did manage to get a brand new pair of fobs for when it is fixed and I managed to find a spare SLM (same part number as mine) at a very reasonable cost, just in case components from the internals are needed to repair mine.
Am I right to assume that firstly I can't just swap over the SLM and expect it to work without any sort of reprogramming the SLM to the car, and then the fobs to the SLM? Secondly are there any recommendations or volunteers in the UK to have a look and see if it is a dry soldered joint that has gone. I don't mind getting oily but electronics are way beyond me. Many thanks in advance. Mark

Take a look at this thread from simon3166. There may be something in there which will guide you:

If the spare SLM you have obtained bears the same numbers, and came from the same body style (coupé or convertible) then you should be able to swop & then mate the fobs.

Many thanks, yes the spare SLM I have also came from a later 4.2S coupe (I was there when it was removed) and it has the identical part number to mine even down to the suffix letters at the end. Perhaps I'll just bite the bullet and just try a direct swap out and see if that does the trick. Then perhaps I'll think about tackling the SLM currently fitted if I need to consider a spare. That of course presumes that I didn't buy myself a dud in the first place.
Thanks, yes I have seen some crazy numbers for this part on the later cars £600-£700. Fortunately I was lucky and the guy breaking the XK8 was great and not taking the mickey. I think it cost me less than £100 along with quite a few other parts that I wanted. Just wish in hindsight I had got more bits from him.
By means of an update.......Success!! I had the battery out today and the rear fuse-box etc so I could ensure that it had a good rust-proofing/prevention across the inside of the boot (trunk) as there were some very minor bits of rust to address. Anyway, I removed the old Security Locking Module which was suspected to be faulty and replaced it with the one that I already had put aside; after waiting several hours until the paint had dried, everything got reassembed and I got the new fobs out that I had purchased some time ago (I didn't realise they came supplied with a battery in, but that was a bonus). Anyway I really struggled to get the car to go into programming mode using the instructions to the letter, but after persevering through several attempts; the light on the J Gate eventually flashed (no chirps or any sound whatsoever) but both new fobs paired thereafter.
So after 3 years of ownership of this car, I'm so pleased that after a bit of fettling, I now have a pair of brand new working fobs for my 2006 4.2S XK8 and without it breaking the bank. Doing some further research afterwards; the part number - LJE2600BD is horrendously priced as a second hand part here in the UK compared to earlier ones that can be found for £100- absolutely no idea why. The only examples with the same part number that I could find in the UK were just short of £900 each....breathtaking!! Even one for sale in Germany was over £700 which with postage and import duties wouldn't be much cheaper. I think I will probably be getting the old SLM sent off to be refurbished (Via Berks Jag Components) as was suggested earlier in this thread as that will cost a quarter of the price if I ever need to replace it again.
