Hi,
Well I got the none running car back from the barn charged the battery put some fresh fuel in it and it started Happy days.
Left it on idle for 20 mins water temp smack in the middle, Battery gauge also in the middle (13 on the Gauge) but red light on
Ragtop went up and down so all in all happy days.
Decided to risk a 200yrd drive, moved J gate from P to R car goes backwards
Move J Gate from R to D car starts to move forward but feels as if it's in 1st, Stop car and move J gate from D to R no movement of the car just revs up (as if in neutral)
Move J Gate from R to P and back to R car goes backwards, but it into D and drive for 100yrds no change of gear.
Do 3pt turn, for reverse to work you must first go into Park!! driving back and using the J gate to select 4, 3 and 2 could not feel it change gear also the shifter seemed sloppy
and the message Gearbox Fault was displayed.
Out with the Scanner, the following code was shown P0706 Transmission Range Sensor. Circuit Range/Performance.
Had a search of the forum and could see the this Code could be a few things like the J shifter or the Gearbox Selector.
But couldn't find anything about having to move into Park first before things would work.
If anyone has come across this before please feel free to chime in.
Thanks XKR

The jokes aside, it’s obvious that your barn find’s gearbox is buggered. Whilst the AJ-V8 engine has a solid reputation, the early ZF gearbox is known to be less reliable. Hence the jokes.
There is hope if you’re good with a ratchet and can diagnose car problems, but the Forum member’s joke about getting the gearbox picked up is essentially the path you’re probably about to travel. Basically a transmission specialist garage needs to get the gearbox to diagnose the issue, as it’s probably not a simply fix.
The car was stored in a barn for a reason, and a broken gearbox is an expensive repair... which is a good reason.
If you want further DIY things you could try, let us know, but it’s not the probable outcome.
Thanks Michaelh,
A very helpful response. After playing around with the car this afternoon I found that the Gearbox Fault message would only show if you moved the J Gate from 3 to Drive.
Once I get some time on the ramp I'll defiantly do this alinement.

Another simple thing to check that can cause fault messages to appear on the instrument cluster is low battery voltage. If the battery voltage with the ignition in the OFF position is less than 12.6 volts when checked with a voltmeter, random DTCs and other electrical 'gremlins' are the result.
