Best way to disable antenna

I simply unplugged mine, at the base of the antenna.
Open the boot and remove the carpeted side piece on the right side. Use a flashlight and look behind the audio equipment, you'll see the base of the antenna. Simply unplug the wire from the base, and that's it.
Funny enough, even with my antenna unplugged I can still receive radio stations quite clearly, but not for as far a distance.

Marine antenna used in trunk option ?
I had mine disconnected 2 years ago but FM stations fade in and out here in Denver, CO and AM radio is unusable. Someone once wrote about running a "marine antenna" around the trunk and connecting it into the system so full reception was restored.
Suggestions on the specific part and where to have it attached?
